Subject: Catalytic Converter QUESTION??? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9L V-6. Within the past month I have been hearing my Cat Converter rattling and it has progressively gotten worse. I have about 43K miles (a little less)on it.
I have heard that the dealer will replace it for FREE??? Does this deal have any stipulations; such as have to be the orginal owner of the truck or anything else along those lines? Is it state law (I live in California) for them to replace it if it goes out before 80K miles? I read a few older posts regarding this but they really didn't say if they were the orginal owners, I'm not, does this matter?
If I have to buy a new one because the dealer won't replace it, who has the best price on one for my truck?
Thanks for the help.

Message:
If the warranty was trasferred over to you on the purchase of the truck, yes they should replace it. But...if you have headers on the truck (JBA), then the warranty on the cat can be voided at the discretion of the dealer. (Which actually works out in your favor...you can put whatever cat you want...that's emissions legal.)
I had talked to Jim Riddle (my old Service manager at Stevens Creek Dodge) about this as well as my current dealer in TX.

Message: Bernd-
What companies make after-market converters for a 1997 Dodge Dakotas? I was told that there weren't any after market ones on the Sport package is this true? I have the Sport Package thats why I ask.
Thanks.

Message: I have a 96 dak, sport 4WD, 3.9 with california emmissions (who knows why, sold new in NY, it's a Dodge thing) and have hunted high and low for a cat. Only one available that is direct fit was from dodge, at $589 (Yeah right, like that will happen). I had already bought a cat SUPPOSEDLY that would fit, turns out it ws a 49 state 2WD cat. Guess what? With a little cut and join work to overcome the problem of the actual cat body ending up right where the torsion bar anchor is, and a short piece of pipe and FIVE, count em, FIVE extra clamps, that bad boy is on there and working. Stock NAPA exhaust from cat back. Sounds a bit lower tone than original, and a LOT less stuffed up without the damn CA cat that restricted hell out of it. Not gonna win any beauty contests under there, with all the clamps and joiners, but it's workin :)

Message: hi,
i have a 1999 volkswagen jetta with 76 thousand miles.
i do have a rattling noice that is comming from my car.it only comes on when i start the car and when i take off.
but i do have power to the car.when the car is running the noice is not there.there is no smell comming from my car.
i had my car checked by 6 mechanic's out of 6
2 said it was my cat.the other 4 said it was not and all i needed was a clamp because the pipe from the cat to the exhaust was ratteling.so i was woundering what u think about this

Message: Ok, you probably need to crawl under your car and see whats vibrating through your exhaust system. If something is shaking separate from the other exhaust parts thats probably where the rattling is coming from. If not it's most likely one of two things your cat. or your muffler. Stock OEM replacements aren't that expensive, having them put on is the most expensive part. Follow the first step and let us know what you see. And good luck!! :)
