Subject: Water pump removal on 98 5.2
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi,
Please help a "Dodge newbie" with his truck. I am replacing the water pump and can't seem to get the fan and clutch off my 98 Dakota 4x4 5.2L. I am trying to remove the shroud (it's loose), fan, and clutch all at once but can't figure out how to remove them. I have the four pulley to pump bolts out (thinking it was like a GM) but it just lets the pulley "dangle" around the shaft of the pump. Does the big "pilot nut?" need to be loosened or removed? How? What's the size of that nut and best way to prevent the pump sahft from spinning? Also, what is the new O-ring for, that I got with the pump? ANY HELP on this would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS!!! Jim

Yes the big nut has to come off. It is normal thread. Some use a big cresent wrench or pipe wrench then hold the pump pulley and smack the wrench with a hammer to shock the nut loose. Me personnally have never been successful this way and I use an air chisel to shock the nut loose. The o ring is probably for the new pump, it may use an oring in place of a gasket.

What I did on my 3.9 was kept the pulley on and used a strap wrench on it. I then used a big a$$ cresent wrench on the nut. Let me tell you, that strap wrench was worth the $20.00 I spent on it!!!
Good Luck,

I did this about a month ago and I found a large screwdriver could be held between the pulley bolts while spining the wrench. The size I believe was 1-1/8" possibly larger.

After you get the nut off and start taking off the Pump your next chore is to get the old pump and gasket off. There is one tube that comes into the pump from underneath the AC/Alternator mounting arch thingy. The only way I could manage to get this hose back on was to loosen all the bolts for the AC/Alt arch and lift the whole assembly slightly and tie it off to a 2x4 through the hood hinges but it did give me just tnough room to get the clamp back on that hose.

Anyhow the point is if you are going to have to pul that whole mess off you might as well do it and give yourself a little more room to get in there with the scraper for the old pump gasket.

two other hints.

1. place a large piece of cardboard in front of the Rad and fold it over the top so you can lean in there. It will keep the cooling fins from being damaged.

2. When you refill the system if you havent bought a new thermostat, take out the old one first or the air in the system will blow it open and it'll most likely stick when you first run it and top it off.

My 2c.

Good Luck, there is no sense of satisfaction like that of sucessfully repairing your own vehicle.

Middy.
