i got an e mail from capital rims today offering me a set of polished r/t rims...which was kinda odd but...what the hell i guess.

my question is though, what is the diff in chrome vs. polished???? do they look similar, last longer, harder to clean...anything????

what would be a good price to pick these up for too? and does ne1 know of any pics of what they look like on a dak????

thanks for the help

I did actually own a set of the polished R/T's from Capital. The difference between polished and chromed is pretty easy to explain. Chrome wheels are the stock wheels that have been dipped into various chemicals which bond to wheel in very, VERY thin layers. The last layer is the actual shiny chrome layer (what the exact metal is, I dont remember). The mirror finsih on chrome wheels is fairly easy to maintain, and can last quite a long time if they have a good chrome job done.

Polished wheels are just that, a wheels that has been polished or buffed to a brilliant NEAR mirror luster. All they do is take a stock wheel, some rubbing compound, and a few high speed drills and such with big buffing wheels on them.
the resulting wheel is ALMOST as shiny as a chrome wheel. They require a lot more care and attention than chrome wheels. About every 5th car wash or so you need to apply some rubbing compound and elbow grease to keep them looking good and not going dull.

I personally prefer the polished over chromed, and if I remember correctly the price ic not too bad. I THINK I paid about $1000 for a set thru Capital Wheels. LOL the best part is i sold some guy my '00 sport 16x7 for $1250!!! LOL......SUCKER

As for pics, hmmmmmm. Its been over a year since my truck departed (R.I.P.), So Ill see if I can dig up any pics.

lol we are one and one heheh. another question, i live in michigan so we definatly get snow and all that other mumbo jumbo. i know its not a real good idea to leave chrome rims on during the winter because they will pit out and all that. is the same true w/ polished? or can you just get out the mothers in the spring and make them look brand new again? just wonderin cause that would matter w/ whether or not i sell my current stock ones.

also, how are wider r/t rims on snow???? would i be better off keeping my regular rims just for the above purpose?

thanks for the help, more opinions please

When I was looking for new rims, I was torn between polished aluminum and chrome. I spent probably the better part of a year checking out rims at shows and talking to people about their rims.

I finally decided on chrome rims because of their deeper shine as well as their care as compared to polished. Chrome rims only require weekly wiping/washing with an occasional coat of chrome wax. Polished rims require a lot more attention as well as time if you want to maintain the luster.

As for winter driving, hang onto your stock rims as it is not a good idea to use either chrome or polished during the winter. Irrepairable harm will more than likely occur if the road salt makes contact for too long. That holds true for either polished or chrome.

Generally speaking the narrower the rim/tire the better snow traction is going to be. Wide tires ride on top of the snow too much rather than cutting their way down to the ground.

i leave my chrome wheels on year round and find that washing them and using wax mode helps to remove salt in winter and keep shine on wheels. i have no pitting on mine. but then i dont push my baby thru the salt and slush in winter if i can avoid it lol so that helps. use the front wheel drive grand am in winter months when i can.
