Subject: Ways to increase gas mileage on 5.2 IP: Logged
Message: Just recently bought a 99 4x4 SLT club cab. I really love the truck the way it rides, handles and all the options on it. The only complaint is that the gas mileage is a little lower than I was hoping for. I was wandering what can be done to increase gas mileage and if there is anything that is of low cost to start out with? Just to let you know everything is still stock on the truck. Hoping for some good ideas.
Thanks,
Brad

Message: The air raid system is nice but a little spendy you can do what the air raid system does for about 60 bucks just goto jegs.com and get the k&n 599-re0870 and then goto the local menards and get some black pvc pipe and a 3"in3"out sewer connection and install it will sit where the box sits right know with alittle finagling and you don't have to worrie about the sheid as heat rises the only other thing is get some flexable hose and run it to the filter by going between the headlight and the radiator behind the grille

Message: I have mopar headers, flowmaster back and k&N intake. I also added a JET computer module which i did notice make a differnce in the mpg. right now i only get 15-16 but i need to replace my wire rotor and cap it think there original with 70,000, so hopfully i could get even better than 15-16. The JET computer module is about $250 but seemed to make a differnce with power and mpg. The flowmaster i've heard makes a differce but i could not tell you since i bought the truck used with them. Other people have mentioned upgrading the ignition system with a msd box a stronger coil and 8.5 wires. I've also heard the msd box is not the best but somthing comprebile maybe better like and accel ignition box?

Message: the only way to really improve your gas mileage is to go the speed limit. I get about 16 mpg normally but when I drive the speed limit I get about 18 to 19... it's a V8, get used to it. She's thirsty...

Message: This may be obvious, but have you checked your cap and rotor? I replaced mine (which were pretty gone) with a Borg-Warner brass set and saw 1.5MPG magically appear - for $6. Added a MSD 6A, BlasterSS coil, MSD wires and MP spark plugs gapped to .045 and picked up another 1.5MPG - for $188. So, I went from 11.3 to 14.3 for under $200. If you look back in the older pages of this site, you'll see lots of similar stories. The Dak ignition is pretty lame as delivered, but it doesn't take much to improve it.

Message: My 97 4x4 got 18-19 (20 at one time) on a trip from Jersey to Florida. In the city I get 14-16 depending on my foot. I have drop in K&N, JBA's, high flow cat, and flow master duals. My next thing will be the e-fan.
Food for thought

Best wishes to those whose lost a loved one in the recent events.

Message: just cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, all filters(oil, tranny, and air), O2 sensor, let your truck warm up(so many people don't do it and it's bad for it and it just pisses me off), and don't gun it. drive like a grandma(but if you need to beat somebody, hammer down). driving slow sucks and is annoying but it helps.

Unfortunatly I have found driving 55-60 MPH increases my gas mileage 2-3 MPG.....Sucks to be driving so slow (especially since the Speed limits out here can be up to 75 MPH) but if you can get an addition 60-75 Miles per Tank your wallet will thank you....

| Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils = Better MPG IP: Logged
Message:
Thank You Dr. D, and I will add ...
Fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge. If you fill up at a warmer part of the day one week compared to the previous week you can sometimes see a huge fluctuation in MPG just based on that. Also, the pump may have stopped pumping sooner this week compared to last, making it "seem" like you used less (or more) gallons of fuel.
It has been proven by Amsoil (and other leading oil manufacturers and suppliers) through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations (and as witnessed by most of our customers), that switching to synthetic oils and lubricants can (and does) improve fuel economy (mpg).
Also, you did not mention what oil viscosity that you are currently using. Depending upon your driving habits, conditions, and climate ... switching viscosities can improve fuel economy also. I've observed a MPG increase when switching grades (5w-30 compared to 10w-40).
Tighter government regulations and increases in engine manufacturers’ demands are calling for more fuel efficient lubricants. Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils reduce friction and drag better than petroleum oils, resulting in significant fuel economy increases. In a recent 1.2 million mile demonstration, AMSOIL Lubricants showed a 4.5% increase in gas mileage. Other tests have shown increases of as much as 15% under certain weather and driving conditions. Yet, because every vehicle is different, as are driving habits and conditions, it is difficult to accurately project an exact increase.

Message: NeverDie - You could probably fashion some sort of rigid brace to keep it from bouncing. Best thing is still a full lid of course.
