Okay, this may seem like a stupid question, but I gotta ask!

The owners manual for my 98 CC says that the keys are somehow encoded, and duplicates can only be made/ordered from a Dodge dealer. Is this accurate, or can I just cut a regular key at a locksmith shop like I have with all my previous vehicles? The guy who owned my truck before me lost one set, and now I only have one key left.

I've been lurking around here for a month now, and found this site to be a fountain of knowledge when it comes to Dakotas. GREAT SITE! Thanks in advance for your help.

Dave

Not sure about that. I have a 2001 CC and I have a few spare keys that I had made, they are just the regular old keys that I bought at the hardware store and had cut there. They seem to work just fine in the ignition. I have heard that some cars (some fords I know of) that use this kind of technology, but at least for my truck, the regular keys work just fine.

Bill,

Thanks for the reply. That's kinda what I figured, as the key I have just seems like a normal key. I thought it might be Dodge's way of getting some more money out of me! I'll get one cut tonight and let you know if it works. Thanks again for your help Bill!

The encoded keys are part of an anti-theft option. You only need the special key if you have the anti-theft option, else standard Dodge key blanks work fine.

I have a 2002 Dak and if I cut a key it will only work in the door lock and not the ignition, as the key has a chip in it. The simple way to tell is that if you have a big key with a Ram head on it, there's a chip and it won't work in the ignition. If it's just an ordinary key, no need to worry.

I have a key with a Black rubber tip that has the ram's head on it, but I have been able to make ordinary keys to work the ignition. But I believe that the black portion on mine is just a rubber cover as I can peel it back a little and see the regular key underneath.

I have a 98 Dakota CC 4 by 4 and I have spare keys that work both the doors and the ignition. To the best of my knowledge I have no anti theft on my truck...I even have the black rubber boot with the ram logo on the key and it works just fine.

The black headed key is the normal one. The one with the security chip is grey.
