Subject: Another tire size question
IP: Logged

Message:

I am the new owner of a 2000 quad cab sport 4.7 2wd. I am purchasing the R/T 17x9 wheel. What would be the best tire size to run? The suspension will be left at the stock ride hieght.

From the 2000 FSM, here are the Daimler-Chrysler "acknowledged" tire sizes:

Tire Size Revs Per Mile
P215/75/R15 760
P235/75/R15 XL 729
P255/65/R15 755
P255/55/R17 750
31x10.50R15 LT 689

My personal suggestion would be to stick as close to a stock-sized tire as possible. That way, you can get the dealer to flash your CAB (Controller Anti-lock Brakes) with the new revolutions-per-mile number of your new rubber. Not only will this keep your speedometer as close to true as possible, but it will also maintain the best ABS behavior.

Do a search on the Internet for tire size calculators. There are some good ones out there (that I never seem to bookmark). They should help you decide what size of tire to get...and how that compares to the stockers.

Thanks for the info Halo3 but I was more interested in what size after market tire would best fit the wheel openings. There are not too many choices in the 255/55/17 catagory and from what I've read I don't want Goodyears.

I just did the same thing on my 01QC. I ended up getting 275/55 17's. They are working very well right now. I got Dunlop SP5000's. You will need to get the fender flares though if you don't have them already. I haven't had any issues with rubbing or anything. Hope this helps.

I got my Dunlops from Discount Tire who in turn got them from Tire Rack. I think they were 154 or so a piece. The total for everything (mounting, balancing, delivery, and Road Hazard) was around 850 I think. They have done very well in the rain so far. They actually have fairly wide channels between a couple of the tread stripes that seem to channel the water. Handles much better that the original eagle LS's. Email me and I can send some pics if you like.

I have a 97 Dak SLT 4x4 shorty with the standard factory aluminum wheels and oem 235-75r15 good-for-a-year tires. They are shot and need to be replaced. I have 5 brand new BFG Long Trail AT skins form my Jeep I never used (31.10.50RX15). I have 3 questions:
Will these fit on my stock aluminum 5 spoke wheels and if so what psi should I run?
Will they fit in the wheel wells fine even when my plow is on?
Anyone run a dak with 10.50R15 rubber who can tell me how it handles especialy in the rain?
All info welcome. Help me to help myself.

i agree, go with the 275/50/17. if you have the 255/65/16 wheels, they are the same height.

PCDoctor: The real question is what size rims are those? My Quad Cab was originally running the 235/75R15's on 15x8 rims. Given the rim size, they could hold the 31x10.50's and their metric equivalent (265/75/R15), as most tire manufacturers state that 8" is the minimum recommended rim width for use with a 31x10.50 sized tire. So, if you are running 15x8 rims, there should not be a problem, but if you have the skinnier 15x7 rims, you may have a problem.

As for clearance on your '97, I'm not sure. I would think that there shouldn't be a problem with clearance, but then again, it seems like all truck-based vehicles just keep getting larger in size as the years go on. Hell, my 2000 Dakota is as large as some of the older full-size trucks on the road, and we all know how big the latest generation of full-sizes have grown. Bottom line is this, do some research, and see if the 31x10.50's were available as an option for your rig.

If you can't find anything out, just take it down to your local tire shop & have them test fit one on the front end, as the front end will have the tightest fit. While it is on there have the tires turned from stop-lock to stop-lock to make sure they don't rub anywhere--frame, fender well, front bumper, etc. The place a jack underneath the A-arm & jack it up to see if the tire will rub with the suspension in an articulated state.

Last, but not least, be aware of the fact that the large tires will throw off your speedometer, odometer, and ABS system. For us 2000+ owners these are all easily corrected by having the CAB (Controller Anti-lock Brakes) flashed with the new tire's tire revolution per mile measurement. I'm not sure how the '97's were built. So, this may or may not apply.

Hope that helps...

Halo3

My personal preference for tire on my R/T, are the 255/50/17 size. loads more choices(stock size for '95-'96 Impalla SS) and cheaper tires at that. Will only throw the speed off about 3mph at normal highway speeds(speedo will read faster thn you are actualy going). The 275/50/17 Falkens SUCK!!!! Never have and never will try the Nitto's. I run the Kumho's on mine right now. ECSTA STX 255/50/17. But if you want to rn the shorter 2550/10/17, you better be lowered or it will look funny.

255/65/16, the OEM sport size, is 29" diameter. 265/55/17 is also 29", unfortunately, only one match in this size: Firestone GT/A. 255/55/17 OEM R/T size runs 28" diameter. One brand I found in this size is the Dunlop Sport LTX. One plus is the 420 treadwear spec. on that tire. 275/60/17 runs 30" diameter.
