Subject: Dakota shuts off-Please help
IP: Logged

Message:
I would appreciate anyone's help or suggestion on what to do with my 92 Dakota (82,000 miles). Last October my truck just started shutting itself off while I was driving it. No pattern. Took it to the dealership and was told it needed a fuel pump. We had our regular mechanic install one. About a month later the problem began again. Since then, we have tried an ignition coil and a precoil. No help. The dealer once again said it was the fuel pump. Today we had the dealer install another new pump and it died twice and almost died twice before I could get home. Does anyone know what the REAL problem could be?

You don't state what engine is in the truck. Could be one of any sensor really. I would start with the Crank Position Sensor myself and go from there. Does the computer store any kind of error code?

It's a V8 5.2 Litre. There are no code errors stored on the computer. Which is why, according to the service manager, it had to be the fuel pump. Besides the Crank Position Sensor, what other sensors should I be aware of? And, thank you so much for responding.

Let me add this, I usually have to pull off the road and put the truck in park before it will start again. Sometimes it will start right up, sometimes I have to wait 20-30 seconds. Once I had to wait approx 5 minutes.

Sounds like the engine control module or the PCM. When the engine control module gets hot the secondary circuits will shut down, when you wait 20-30 seconds it will start up again, I had this problem on my 82 Mustang GT.You need to look at the module or PCM for the electrical breakdown. Modules breakdown through time..from heat and cold, etc... keep us posted.

Thanks again for responding. I hate to belabor this, but I will need to contact the dealer tomorrow and would like to be armed with as much info as possible.

One morning I started the truck, it was running for about 30 seconds, I began backing out of my 70 degree garage and it stalled. I wouldn't think the truck would really be overheated at this point - could it still be the control module or PCM? (what is a PCM?)

Let me add one more thing. On several occassions the truck will appear to be stalling (steering goes and the gauges on the dashboard drop) and then all of a sudden the truck will kick back in. I just never know what to expect.

Could be the fuel filter? I would try a new fuel filter. If you got bad gas somewhere it could plug the filter.

There is a splice in the wiring just below the Power Distriution Center. Peel back the wire loom and the tape. Inspect the wiring near the PDC. These splices are common for corroding.

Could be vapor lock. Look to see if there are any gas lines near hot parts.

I want you all to know I'll be printing this info - I'm sure it'll all be new ideas to the dealer service staff.

BTW, the fuel filter has been replaced 2 times. I have been assured by a local mechanic that where I normally get my gas uses a very reputable distributor. I have always used 91 octane.

My husband doesn't think it's vapor lock since the truck stalls when it is cold as well as hot. I'm trying not to say too much to him today...besides, it's hard to talk with someone who is on the ceiling......

Thank you all for your interest and help. If I ever get this resolved, I will be sure to let you know the outcome. Unless I'm in debtor's prision. ;)

Has the fuel preassure been checked? if it is good, and the fuel filters are ok, how about the voltage output from the Alternator? if it is low the battery wont maintaine the 12.5 volts, this could be causing the PCM(Computer) or module to not work properly. Is the battery going bad???

Okay, I made the call and am traveling the 60 miles - hopefully - back to the dealer this afternoon. I will make one last check back here about 3pm to see if there are any more ideas.

Thanks so much everyone.

Follow CW's advice, this is a common problem on the 5.2 and it will drive you nuts ....it is the corrosion problem I would bet the mortgage.

My neighbor's Dak did something like that, turned out that there is a short piece of fuel line between the fuel pump outlet and where it leaves the tank. It had a slit in it, and the fuel was leaking out of it, caused fuel pressure to be low. When they replaced the pump, did they replace the short piece of fuel line?

Hi everyone.

I said I would let you all know the progress on my truck. We're still working on it. The last time I picked up the truck from the dealer, gas overflowed when I filled the gas tank and the gas gauge didn't work. They supposedly repaired some wiring. Very vague report. We did make it 300 miles before the truck turned itself off. I don't think we made a lot of improvement here.

However, the truck is back at the dealer's and they've called and left a message it is ready for pick up. I could call and ask what they found the problem to be but think I'll wait and be pleasantly (ahem, hopefully) surprised when we pick it up this evening. Wish me luck. Thanks.

I have a 2000 Dak v6 and went through a similar problem. Mine shutoff and wouldn't start again. After days of work and a new fuel pump. They said it was the computer that needed to be change. They said a card in it shorted and took out the rest of the computer, plus it screwed up my tranny too. Good luck.

My vehicle has been doing the same thing for about a year now. Does anyone know if this got resolved? I was looking for the corroded wires but haven't found anything yet. Should I clean the EGR or just replace it?

Hi everyone - it's been a while and I apologize for not getting back to you all. To say this experience has been frustrating would be an understatement.

All my notes are at home so I'm going to try winging it on my very bad memory. :) After checking wires, fuses and most of what was mentioned above, being towed and generally losing my mind, the service folk decided it must be the SMEC (?) - the computer brain, if you will.

Following replacement of the SMEC the truck finally stopped dying! However, we noticed almost immediately that the truck wouldn't shift into overdrive. It was not the little computer chip as it had been once before. Back to the dealer. They absolutely assured us that this problem was not related to the SMEC installation. Instead, the truck needed a new valve body - I think that's what it says on a piece of paper somewhere? Or was it ring body?

Anyhoo, since I had already decided the service folk at Anderson Dodge Chrysler in Lake Havasu City, Arizona were less informed than a rock, I drove away thinking I would just drive this vehicle until the tires fell off and just forget about any more repairs. About 2 months later the truck started shifting into overdrive again. Go figure. That was last month. I can't believe this project has lasted a year. Yikes!

I just turned 90,000 miles and am keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone experiencing the same problem - I hope your fix will be one of the cheaper ones!

I had an O/D problem with mine around 50k or so. The dealership rebuilt it 2x then finally decided to replace the tranny around 60K under warranty. They told me some of the early tranny/overdrive units were crappy in the 92.

Anyone have an idea what an SMEC is?? Is it the same thing as the PCM? The engine management module?
