Subject: rattling under truck...cont.. IP: Logged
Message: alright i went under my dakota today and tried to figure out what the problem was. I narrowed it down to the exhuast just like you guys suspected. all the heat shields are in place and all the bolts are tight. im almost 100% positive that the problem is the catalytic converter, prolly because when i hit it w/ a hammmer it sounds like something is rattling around inside the catco. i guess my question is...first, what the hell could be rattleing around inside the damn thing. and second, im assuming the only way to fix this is to buy a new catco. but im also looking at putting a new exhaust on during the summer, so, do i just buy a replacement regular old catco or do i buy one of those highflow ones from speedtweaks??? what is the price difference and are the gains worth the price????? also what is the overall reccommendation as far as what exahust to put on. i have a 99 3.6 v6 and i want better sound and more power, plus a sweet looking pipe. price is a factor, and loudness in the cab is also kinda a factor, im gonna have a pretty decent sq system installed, i dont want it to be compromised by the damn muffler. thanks for the help.

Message: I am getting a rattling noise on my 97 5.2L truck. I crawled underneath it and it definitely seems to be the catco. Truck is starting to sound like a diesel but not as loud. I now am planning on replacing mine with a high flow catco when I add a catback system in the next few months. With what I have read here I am leaning towards the Gibson swept side single from Speedtweaks as long as I can get it shipped to an APO address since I am stationed overseas.

Message: had one cat replaced under warranty. Second one rattled after warranty ran out. Got a Cuda style MBRP exhaust, thru it on , and also did a little cesarean operation the cat. (took the guts out and stitched her back up) Got a nice little rumble now out of those two tips. Every so often I get a 21 code and check engine light comes on. But most of the time --both sensors are OK.

Message: no, it makes no difference if your the second owner. It should still be covered by the dealer 7 years or 80,000 miles. I was the second owner and they replaced the cat on my 97 at 78,000 miles. They know what the problem is when you drive in. It will be easy, just take it to the dealership and it will be fine.
