Subject: Tire Size Question IP: Logged
Message: I recently purchased a 2000 Quadcab 4.7. I was just looking at the tires and noticed that the door said the tires were supposed to be P235 75 R15XL. The tires on the vehicle are actually 31x10.5xR15LT according to the sidewall. If I am correct this correlates to a P265 75 R15 (More or less). This would theoretically have a substantive effect on the speedometer readings and odometer. Am I right or are these tires basically the same as the listed size. If I am right shouldn't I be able to go back to the dealer and have proper size tires put on. The truck was purchased from a sizable new car dealership, not a small used car lot or anything. BTW the tires are Goodyear Wrangler RT/S - are these good, bad or indifferent??
Thanks.

Message: I have a 2001 CC and I have the Tire and Handling package which came with the Goodyear RT/S tires. I have 13500 on it (bought it new in July) and really like the tires. They handle well on the highway and did very well in some heavy snow this winter.

Message: Bill,
Do you have the 31 x 10.5 x15XL tires?? Did it come that way?? What size tires are listed on your door sticker? The main part of my original question was about the tire size vs. the size listed on the door sticker.
Thanks

I will go out in the morning and take a look and compare numbers. I hadn't really thought to look before now, but I will go out and have a look in the morning and get back to you.

Message: Well, I have another question. I have Quad Cab 4x2 and it came with the tire & handling package. My tires (P255 75 R15)... well, they look kinda puny. I want the more aggressive look--the look that says, "I'll run your ass over."
I was wondering if a set of P265 75 R15 would be possible on a 4x2? Would there be any 'rubbing'?
Thanks,
Tim™

Message: The tire size listed on the door is for the minimum size tire and rim that comes on the truck. It is "standard unless replaced by optional equipment" ie: the tire and handling package.

Second number is sidewall size.
First number (P...)is a ratio of hieght to width (i think, but im not sure, i just woke up)
if it has a number like 30 or 31.5 thats overall hieght. Then if that is the first number, the second will be like 9.5 or 10.5 and that is the width. One set of numbers is metric an and the other is metric.

Message: Checked my truck today and here's what I found:
Sticker on Door:
P215/75R15
Actual Tires:
P265/70R16
Like graphite said, that is all because I got the tire and handling package and they don't go on the factory to each truck and put different stickers on each truck based on the options of them. It would be too costly and time consuming.

| RE: Tire Size Question IP: Logged
Message: First number is width in millimeters
Second number is sidewall height expressed as a ratio of width, i.e., on a 265/70 tire, the tread width is 265 mm wide and the sidewall is 185.5 mm tall. To get the overall tire height, you have to multiply the sidewall height by 2 (sidewall at the top and sidewall at the bottom) and add in the wheel diameter. to convert millimeters to inches, divide by 25.4. Thus a 265/70-R16 tire is 265mm or 10.43 inches wide, by 30.60 inches tall ( 265 / 25.4 = 10.43 ... 10.43 x .70 = 7.3 ... 7.3 x 2 = 14.6 ... 14.6 + 16 = 30.6 ) on a 16 inch wheel.

Message: Thanks Bill and Graphite. I got a printout from Dodge of the original setup of my truck from the factory and it had the tire and handling package which included the 31x10.5x15XL tires. I have to assume then that they make the appropriate adjustments to the speedo and odometer to compensate at the factory (especially as Bill has 16" tires when the door says 15"). I would have thought that the door sticker would correlate to the speedo settings from the factory. Guess not.
Thanks again everyone for setting me straight.
