Subject: Filter For Synthetic Oil? IP: Logged
Message: I am thinking about switching to Synthetic, but not sure what filter to use. Everyones got their own likes and dislikes. Prior to buying my 2001 Motorsports Edition Dak, I had a 1984 Chevy Cavalier, and just threw quaker state 10w10 in there with fram filters. Since I bought the truck, i've just had the oil changed at the dealership, but would like to swtich to synthetic. Just looking for a good oil, and a good filter to use, cause i've heard that Fram collapse on these engines? Anyone with ideas, please let me know. Thank you!

Message: Well up to yesterday I used the mobile 1 filter. I have switched to Baldwin B34. It is as good as it gets and I get them for $4.22. That is $5.88 less then the mobile 1 filter. This filter is built like a brick Sh*t house. I was realy impressed with the construction it is built even tougher then a K&N. I doubt I will ever use anything else as long as I can get them. If $4.00 per filter is too much try an AC/Delco or Napa Gold.

Message: Baldwin is used mainly on Diesel engines. really good filters. We had them on our EMD engine on our tug. I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil and filter. the Mobil 1 filter is for synthetic. it's 10 bucks here. i just haven't heard of anyone using Baldwin on a gas engine. I know many big rigs use them.

Message: Hasting makes a good filter as well! There is nothing stupid about wanting to filter out as small of particals as reasonable. What is stupid is not takeing care of your second most expensive investment. The leading cause of engine failure is from contaimnates that the filter is unable to filter out. As far as filters specificly for synthetic there realy is not such a beast. The reason that the mobile one is"synthetic" is because it uses synthetic fiber in the filter media. The synthetic fibers are able to catch smaller particals. The baldwin also use some synthetic fibers but it also uses natural fibers and is a blend of many differnt fibers. The reason for useing a better filter with synthic is mostly to maximize engine life. My goal is to get a minimum of 300,000 miles out of this Dodge. If I am going to spend extra for synthetic then I want to keep as many engine contaminates from reentering the engine. I want to stop as many as I can on the first pass. I also want to have plenty of storage room in the filter so I have no problem getting 5000-7000 miles out of the filter with out it entering into bypass. I am considering a a bypass filtering system. I think it has a nominale rateing of 1/2 micron and a absoulute rateing of 2 microns! I will have to double check the rateing. Ya we cut aircraft filter open and send a filter sample to be tested as well as an oil sample. I am considering this type of program for mine as well. Anyone know of a company that tests oil and has good prices?

Message: Art, The filter media in the fram is not the bigest problem. It is true that they use less sq. area of filter medium in their filters then anyone else they have other problems. Fram (allied signal)uses cardboard end caps and center tube instead of steel. They use a chaep silicone anti-drain back valve that often sticks allowing contaminated oil to drain back into the pan. They also have problems with the filter bypass actuateing on-off on-off dureing normaly operation. This causes alot of lifter problems as the vechile is momentarily starveing for oil. The X2 is the same poor design with better filtering media. I used Fram for abour 28 years and now I will not go near one. I have only owned one car with hydralic lifters and one with mechanical lifters. All of the other vechiles had over head cam.

Message: There is no such thing as a "Synthetic filter". Yes some oil filters are better than other I prefer Valvoline Oil and filters, Valvoline is a very high detergent oil and their filters are the best you can get for your money. I have run Valvoline in evertyhing I have ever owned except for my Mustang in that I ran penzoil cause it had a parafin base to it so it plugs up the leaks, but anyway, I have been running Valvoline Synthetic and Filters since the day I bought my 99 CC 5.2 4x4 and run about 4000-4500 miles between changes. You can pull the dipstick out any time and still see clean oil.

Message: About a year ago I switched from mobil-1 to ACDelco ultraguard gold oil filters.
It uses 100% synthetic media. It has an efficiency rating of 98 percent at 8–10 microns and traps particles up to four times smaller than particles trapped by conventional filters.
The specs claim "*Engineered to trap smaller contaminants. Ultraguard Gold can help reduce engine wear by up to 74 percent. Based on independent testing of oil filters using single-pass efficiency (Ref. SAE J1858)."
There is an competitive comparison chart available here: http://www.acdelco.com/html/pi_filt_oil_gold_comp.htm

Message: ya I`ve seen that site before Sandman,they dont have that X2 on there tho,I know all companys hype their own products,I will give it a shot and see how it is,I go grab one tomorrow.You know I used to always use ph8a frams all the time and never had a problem although I probably change my filter every 3 months and the oil every 6 months,the K&n is well made but it costs like 20 bucks here and that X2 is half the price so wtf give it a shot.Allied signal make some descent products, autolite plugs and prestone to name a couple

Message: Since my good friend is an Amsoil dealer, I get my oil at cost. Amsoil also makes their own oil filter to which I have used over the years. When I had my 95 Cavaliar I used Amsoil 10W30 and an Amsoil filter. Now that I have my 98 Dakota, I also use Amsoils oil filter.
If you would like to get prices on Amsoil, email me and I will email you my friends email address.
Personally I have never done research on oil filters before. I have always eithter used Fram, Castrol or Amsoil. Never had a problem with any of those before.

Message: 98FlameRdDak, Amsoil does not make their own oil filter's. They also do not make the dual filter bypass oil filter base. I think that the full flow filter made buy Baldwin. The filter base has the company that makes it stamped right on it. I have no idea who makes the bypass filter for them.

Message: Justin read the Magnusen Moss Act(sp). The manufacture can not require you to use any given brand of product in order to maintain your warranty unless they provide they product to you free of charge! The manufacture can only set standards and specifications for a given product. So if you apply this to oil they can tell you what specifications the oil must meet but can not require any one brand. So they can say you have to use an API approved oil and can specify a certin weight. They can not tell you what source the hydrocarbons come from. If a dealer tell you stuff like this ask for it in writeing and send a copy of it to Diamler.

"Factory Fill" with Mobil 1:
*Chevrolet Corvette
* All Porsche vehicles
* Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles
* Dodge Viper
* Ford Mustang Cobra R
* All Aston Martin cars
Justin's girlfriend's Ford dealer must not want
her to run the same oil as the Ford Mustang
Cobra R. Go figure.

Message: For those that are wondering what are the best filters and oils for most personal vehicles,I recommend Amsoil and their line of new SDF full flow oil filters. They carry HASTINGS filters also, and Bosch Products. I've used Amsoil for over a decade with no problems. I change the oils annually, the fullflow filters at 6mo intervals.
I am not an Amsoil Dealer, I just use their products... so please don't shoot me.
The one reason synthetic does so well over petroleum is that it is molecularly stable. All of the molecules are virtually the same. Not so with petroleum.
With synthetic, you reduce friction which in turn reduces internal heat and wear and tear on the motor or moving parts. Less friction means less wear - more horsepower with less work for the engine to do.
Amsoil also has it's oil extended drain interval warranted which is something you won't see too often with other synthetics. Historicly, Amsoil's prices on oil and their line of extended drain screw-on engine oil filters and by-pass oil filters are cheaper than the others ... they carry HASTINGS filters also.

Message: I thought the Hastings filter was pretty well constructed too, but the co. says it filters only to 22 microns- not bad, but not great. The Pur-o-lator "Pure 1" goes down to 10 microns! I've got a 5.0 'Stang with a few "extra logs in the fire", & believe me when I say it has seen hundreds of nice long 6000rpm thrashes. At 55,000 the heads were off, and the advantages of Mobil 1 were plainly visible. No wear! Fresh cross-hatch on the thrust side of every cylinder! It's around 400hp now, & lives well on Mobil 1 & Pure One (naming coincidence?) Apparently, the best oil filter ever was the AC Delco "Ultraguard Gold"; 8-10 microns with the highest flow capacity, but they don't make them anymore! Anybody know what's up with that?
