Subject: Not ONE -- But TWO Warning Lights.....!! IP: Logged
Message: “For No Apparent Reason,” both the “ABS” and the “Brake” warning lights have been ON all day in the 99 5.9. Brakes work fine. Have brought it to the shop for their “expert analysis.” What can I expect – both parts wise, and price wise (p.s. – hopefully the extended warranty will cover.). In the meantime – I am doomed to drive the rental, a Pontiac Sunfire (Red) with manual-windows. Talk about a couple notches down…. Yeeeshk!

Message: The speed sensor on top of the diff went out - quite common. Go to the dealer and buy a new one it's $35.00 plus tax and takes about 5 minutes to swap , all you need is a ratchet and a 1/2" and deep 9/16" socket.

Message: What happens if I don't get this thing "fixed" by the dealer (becuase they'll probably want $500 to fix), but decide to take my time, do it myself over the weekend. Harmful to drive?

Message: I was serious when I said it takes all of 5 minutes , all it involves is 2 nuts on one stud and 1 electrical connection. The 1st nut holds a clip that retains the metal brake line and the nut under it holds the speed sensor.

Message: I drove mine for a couple of weeks before changing it....the part was out of stock!! Gee, why did they run out? Maybe too common of a problem? Oh well, easy fix and not too expensive.

Message: I replaced 2 on my 91' Dak before I gave up. I took the bulbs out of the dash so I don't have to look at the lights. My brakes work fine. The anti-lock still works too. They have a crappy design to that speed sensor. There is a serrated ring bolted to the back side of your rear-end ring gear. The sensor mounts just above it on the outside of the housing. The factory manual shows there has to be a certain size gap between the sensor tip and the peaks on the serrated ring for it to work right. I spent 2 hours shimming mine and measuring with the differential cover off. The second time I just replaced it. The third time I said screw it!!

Message: Well, I should have gone with my instincts, but like a “dummy,” decided to wait until the morning, as I was going to repair this thing myself. I called the dealership at 830 a.m., asked for parts dept. They had 4 speed control sensors in stock, each $31.00 and some change. I asked them to transfer me to the service dept., as I was going to cancel my appointment, pick up the part, do the job myself. I talked to the service manager and said I was on my way to get the Durango, was going to do the job myself -- he said (after telling me last night at 530 p.m, “I may not even get to your vehicle tomorrow – we’re packed.”) “We, duh, uh….. , uh…. .we diagnosed it last night, and sure enough, it’s a speed sensor.” SUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE you did. So, I was already into this job $66.00 for their “expert diagnosis.” I pulled into the lot and there was the Durango, in the same exact spot it was in last night, wheels cocked a little to the left, exactly the way the crook, er, the Service Manager left it. I guess they wheeled the diagnostic machine out into the parking lot. So, as it stood, I was $66 + $31, and the job still wasn’t done. I asked, “how much to put it in and can you do it in less than an hour, I am in a hurry.” “Sure,” he says – and he got another $33.00 out of me for a half hour labor. I figured at this point, it wasn’t worth the hassle of driving home and doing the job, in other words, “I’ll give these thieves another $30 just to get the hell out of here and go camping.” These guys MUST work on commission. I swear. Anyone know? So – I want to thank those in the forum who recommended the part – you were right on the money! And I want to encourage others in the future to AVOID the dealership – at all costs. A bunch of freaking crooks. Oh yes, PS, my “extended warranty” didn’t cover the part, nor the labor! – Jim

Message: I'm sure a lot of what you just went through has a lot to do with the fact that you're in Virginia. :-) I've talked to the 'experts' quite a few times myself...I'm making it a point to ALWAYS come here first for problem diagnosis.
Current mods: A MUFFLER. That's it. (For now.) Future mods: Tonneau cover Underdrive pulleys Removal of clutch fan K&N FIPK 17" rims And much, much more...

Message: I took the advice of another guy in another forum who recommended I bring this matter to the attention of Chrysler. I wrote a nice note and e-mailed this morning. I am sure I'll get a nice "thanks for your interest, comments like yours help us do better" reply. In the perfect world, Chrysler would decend on that dealership like a Daisy Cutter on the Taliban, but I don't think that's going to happen. - Jim

Message: The saga thickens.
The dealership called me this morning and said "some of their keys stuck" on their credit card machine and I was only charged $17.82 for the $150 repair bill. They'd like me to come in and pay the balance. Idiots??

Message: Jim,,,,
Allow them only to charge what the part cost considering what transpired. If they give you slack,,,just blow up in their faces.
Sure it seems immature/mean,,,but you feel sooooo good after doing it, and you can generally get some free stuff out of it!

Message: MY 89 HAS THE SAME CONDITION. IT BEGAN IMMEDIATELY AFTER I REPLACED THE DOOR LOCK SWITCH ON THE PASSENGER SIDE.IT MAY BE COINCIDENCE BUT I HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH OTHER MAKES. THERE IS USUALLY SOME TYPE OF SECRET METHOD THAT WILL RESET THE THING. I AM STILL TRYING TO FIND OUT IF THIS IS THE CASE ON MY TRUCK. I HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF DEALER HERE AS YOU DO. I HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF CATCHING BIGFOOT SPANKING HIS MONKEY THAN EXTRACTING ANYTHING FROM THE DODGE PLACE.
