Subject: Radiator draincock answers

Last week I was changing the coolant in my radiator on my 93 4x4 Dakota w/318 for the first time and was surprised to find that instead of a draincock there was a plastic wingnut type of plug. This turned out to be a very messy job because you cant drain the coolant slowly, you must remove the plug all the way. When I went to the parts store they gave me one that looked like it would fit and the man told me it was for some kind of magnum radiator or something. I got it home and the draincock was just a little to small. Anyone konow whats up with this?

I changed mine a month ago, had a plastic wing nut thing also but it did not come all the way out and was very controllable, but I had to use all my strength to get it to budge.

Yes, I have that same type of "wingnut" draincock. It doesn't pull out on mine, its just really hard to get it loose. I had an s-10 though that you had to pull out, and they can be very messy, guess you'll just have to tough it out.

I've been doing this a long time, and I've drained many a radiator before, but I was crawling around underneath the front end of my 2002 V6 Dak today, trying to locate the radiator drain valve, and I could not find it for the life of me. I removed the plastic air dam shield that covers the bottom of the front radiator supports/tranny fluid lines, and even the top half of the fan shroud so that I could look down inside...no luck. Where the crap is this thing?

LEAVE THE DRAIN VALVE ALONE !!

The plastic drain valves give a lot of trouble (threads strip easily) and it is best to just disconnect the lower hose for flush and fill service.
If you do strip threads the insert is replaceable but sometimes aggravating to install.

Keep it simple and safe and just disconnect the hose.

Dr. D...thanks for the warning! As it turned out, I didn't have to drain the radiator after all. From what I've found out, I'm very glad that I didn't! How do you keep from making a big ugly mess if you just disconnect the lower hose to drain, though? Or, can you?

Mikey...the lower radiator hose is on the left side, about 1/3 of the way down (standing at the front of the truck, looking at the engine). Big black 2" hose, goes into the water pump. It's not very low at all, I'm not sure how this works...most lower hoses I've seen are at the very bottom of the radiator.

Blue '97 Dodge Dakota Club Cab SLT: 3.9L V6 auto. IAT behind headlight 180 thermostat, Homenbrau cold air intake with K&N filter, Bosch Platinum plugs (next tune-up it'll be autolites) ripped off that g-dang rubber flap by the radiator and Air Box fender boot thing, Borg & Warner plug wires (soon to be JBA).
