 Subject: Mysterious noise after belt replacement

Hello all,
I few weeks ago I finally changed my drive belt (at around 60k) in my 97 CC 5.2. I purchased a belt made by Gates (supposedly a good belt I guess) and since then, I have a knocking sound that occurs each time the belt just passes the tensioner pulley. I want to say that it's just the belt, but after cranking on the tensioner to replace the belt, I'm afraid I may have damaged something in there. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so what has been done to correct it? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. It's driving me nuts!!!
