I was wondering if anyone has heard any word on if the state plans to mandate emissions "sniffer" testing? I read in the paper today that Tarrant, Denton, Collin, Dallas, and Harris counties are going to make inspections 35 bucks and require that 96 and newer vehicles pass an OnBoard Diagnostics test. That is where they tap into the PCM. Older vehicles will undergo an Acceleration Simulation Test and have emmisions tested like they were cruising the highway. I just wanted to let yall know, and wondered if it is going to happen statewide. I hope not, thats just more money I have to give to the government to drive a vehicle i already own.

I think they will start the tests in the city first (Dallas, FW, Houston, etc.) before going to the rural areas.

We got a lovely speed limit change in Houston this year, it is now 55MPH just about everywhere. Supposed to reduce emissions by 2%, so I can finally breath better. Yeah right!

Yeah, i think that 55 mph thing is BS! Lets see, if you do seventy, you get to where your going and you can not have the car running for longer than necessary. At 55 it takes longer to go some place which means the cars are running longer. That makes real sense when trying to reduce emissions. Hey lets keep all the cars on the road and running longer!!!!!! (sarcasm) Not to mention how bad Houston traffic is, i cant imagine it at 55 mph, i know that there are people who will abide by it and those who wont. That, in my opinion, can cause wrecks. Houston is notorious for having to shut down entire freeways because of wrecks. Im glad I dont live there.

The three cars on the road that are going 55 hold everything up, and now HPD/DPS is building a new task force to enforce it.

Why not put the hammer down on the plants that contribute 75% of our pollution? What about the 8 million 18 wheelers from Mexico that don't even pass state inspections?

WTF?

Hey R/Truck I can bet that you and I are going nowhere near 55. I get pissed when I am doing less than 75 on I-45. Idiots can't drive here, I swear. The next person that I see doing exactly 70 in the left lane on the beltway is getting run off the road. Cell phone in hand gets an upgrade to flat tires. Trying to get this Houston Club setup, send me an email. shodude@yahoo.com

Oh no! Texas is being over run by the Eco-nazis!

They went to more stringent emissions testing here in NJ several years ago, and, it's proving to be an epic screw up.

They hired an idependent contractor to run the program.

They (the contractor), are getting sued for damaging cars (there's a rumor going around that some dudes car went off the dyno rollers and hit the car in front of him). They are also getting fined big time for either failing cars unecessarily, or, for not testing cars properly.

Also, the lines at these testing facilities are so long, that there's a questions as to how much pollution they're causing by having thousands of cars idling state-wide, awaiting their turn to be inspected!

I just hope these idiots (Politicians, of course) come to their senses before they cause some real damage.

Don't the politicians realize the cars are being made to run cleaner now, and they shouldn't mess with a mans truck.

As Sammy H. would say "I can't drive 55!"

I think it's BS.. If I get pulled over for doing 70 in a 55 I'm gonna tell um that they can shove it.. And take it to court and ask for a jury trial. It pisses me off that they are having HPD and DPS enforce a environmental law.. And that crap about dyno testing every vehicle! WTF! I still think that the majority of all the pollution here is coming from diesel rigs and the petro chem plants around here.
Thanks,

I have read that Montgomery, Ft Bend, San Jacinto, etc. (surrounding counties of Harris) will have the new test in 2003. Kind of sucks, cause if you remember back in the early 90s they tried the new test and it was so costly they stopped it. So we had a bunch of empty testing sites around for a few years. I will be damned if I go and buy a new cat, smog pump, etc for my $800 Ford F-150 that gets driven 100 miles a month.

But us Southern folk have some real pieces of crap on the road down here. Redneck trucks with chewing tabacco tried on the side, mexican lawn service in there 78 Ford, Central American 18 wheelers with no brakes, primered pintos with the handicap stickers, etc. etc. we just get nervous when we hear emissions test. It's hard to get people to comply with new laws, its generally met with resistance. Besides we have been hollowing out our cats like crazy for the past 20 years not knowing it would ever come back to bite us in the ass.

The problem with rednecks is that they don't like change. And to us making our trucks run cleaner is a change. I like seeing a Ford F350 Diesel making smoke all over the place, it's cool. I also like to watch my truck sit and smoke for hours on end. This is all being caused by yankees.

Just My Opinion.

from everything i have heard is that the emssions test on like 95 or 96 and newer is the same, they are just adding a diagnostic to it.. all they do is scan the computer for codes. The vehicles before that (non OBD II) will have to run on a dyno (probably mentioned before). Looking at my last emissions test, the higher the engine speed the less emissions my truck put out. I only put out like 15 hydrocarbons at most. My dad went to get his 92 camaro inspected and failed.... but the car doesnt run right... my brother had his 98 jeep pass two days ago with no mods or anything.
