Subject: Washing My Dak! IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I'm going to be making a trip to Canadian Tire/Wal Mart, to pick up stuff to wash my Dak. I have a couple questions for ya.
I have a black 2001 dakota and after the winter i've got quite a few rock chips, what can i do to fix these (besides taking it to a paint shop)?
I'm gonna buy a pressure washer and was wondering how powerful of one to get (how many PSI)?
What washing/waxing products should I buy to keep my Dak looking brand new? Thanks for your help, dodgeee-O.

Message: I don't recommend using pressure washer because it doesn't always remove the contaminants. I prefer hand-washing.
But if you're going to use it, be extremely careful with the pressure washer. I recently bought one for the family hotel and tried it on my old dodge minivan. What happened was that the paint came off when the pressure was too high because it wasn't removing bugs and tar. There's no telling what the PSI was but I can tell you that the results were not pleasing...

Message: a pressure washer is a great investment,
undercarriage and suspension as well as engine
cleaning is a breeze. Get one that is around
1300psi, they have adjustable nozzle for various
tasks. MX bike cleanup is a cinch!
As for washing, dont use it on the paint at full
pressure, fan it on instead. handwash your truck
and change sponges often.
The Black paint is notorious for scratches, its a
soft compound???
Anyways, i use Nu finish one a year car wax ( but
do it every 4 months, turtle wax color cure polish
(great for masking scratches) and meguires instant
showtime finish for light cleaning.
Good luck, black is tough to keep clean, but when
it is, i wouldnt have any other
color!!!

Message: Not a soft compound... Blacks just provide more contrast to scratches--it's just easier to detect.
A white Dakota will probably have equal scratches to a black Dakota... but not very visible. We just know it's there.

Message: Only get a prssure washer as close to your paint as you would your own skin. Trust me, I have ripped skin off with some of them pressure washers.
Zaino that bastard, I am Zainoin mine this week, I'll be sure to take some before and after pictures and show you it's unworldy abilities.
If you REALLY want to know how to make the most beautiful looking waxing, I'll give you a list of what you need, but it's not pleasing to the pocket.
The only thing I can really reccomend from Walmart is simple green, "The Absorber", and Back to Black -- not much else I can think of. This stuff WILL make your truck have the deepest black in your area.

Message: Couple of items I recommend for all vehicles.
-Water blade squegee: makes drying a cinch
-Multi pack terry cloth towels: I usually buy white. You can get 50 towels for about $12. Use them on the vehicle ONLY. Use the same towels for drying everytime. Make sure they are laundered with plenty of fabric softner and seperate any soiled rags for *grimey* cleanups
-Zaino wax is best, but if you are on a budget any carnuba wax will do. Most auto retailers sell 10 different brands of wax and guess what? The cheapest is as good as the most expensive! Wax once a month. Detail every 6 months.
-$25 electric leaf blower: Works well to assist in drying. Gets all the nooks and hidden areas that hold water!

Message: I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with this part:
-Multi pack terry cloth towels: I usually buy white. You can get 50 towels for about $12. Use them on the vehicle ONLY. Use the same towels for drying everytime. Make sure they are laundered with plenty of fabric softner and seperate any soiled rags for *grimey* cleanups
Do NOT use Terry cloth towels. If you even read Zaino's site it will tell you not to at all costs. Why do you want to go through the entire expensive process of zaino and use cheap rags from China??
From the Zaino man himself:
Cannon & Fieldcrest make a lower quality version of their towels for K-Mart, Walmart and other big discount chains.
These towels say 100% Cotton but that is not, totally true. The nap is 100% cotton but the backing material has polyester blend in it.
So if you press a little to hard on the towel you can get some fine scratches or swirls.
The point I'm trying to make is if a Cannon or Fieldcrest towel is selling in a discount store for $6.00 or less (approximately) it is not the good stuff.
I buy all my Cannon & Fieldcrest towels in the Bath & Linen shops in the bigger stores in the mall. I pay anywhere from $10 to $20 per towel. These are the real deal. I buy about 3 or 4 towels and they usually last
me about a year.
Now for you guys that may have already purchased the lower price towels.
Look carefully at your paint finish when you are using your towels. If you are not getting any swirls or fine scratches, then you are okay. Remember it's better to be safe than swirly.
Another problem I'm seeing is some of you guys are using powdered detergent to wash your towels. Powdered detergents contain granules that do not fully dissolve in the wash cycle and get trapped in the nap of
the towels, these granules will scratch your paint finish.... Only use Liquid detergents like All or Tide. Also do not use Bleach or any kind of fabric softner.
You must use only white. Not colored towels.....Colored towels are not
to be used because the dye leaves a chemical residue on the paint finish. Always wash your towels first before using. Use Liquid detergent and rinse twice.
You should cut the selvages(borders) off the perimeter of the towels. This selvage contains nylon and polyester stitching that could possibly scratch your paint finish. The towels will fray a little once this is
done. But it's better to play it safe.
Drying the towels on high heat will make them hold a static charge. I use the regular heat setting and remove them a little damp and let them air dry. You can fluff the towel real good when it's dry to make it
softer.
As the towels get older they will lose there nap and absorbency and will have to be replaced.
If you're going to take the "Zaino Plunge", don't skimp on something as small as towels. For 18 bucks you can get some awesome towels!

I think I'm going to go with the Meguiar's product line because I can get it just about anywhere without ordering from the US (I live in CANADA).
On their site i did a prescription form and this is what my results came back as, do you think this sounds about right?
1. Mirror Glaze Hi-Tech Wash
2. Medallion Prmium Paint Cleaner
3. Mirror Glaze Show Car Glaze
4. Medallion Premium Paint Protection
Also, what about a tire/rim product? Will one product (such as hot rims) do both rims and tires or do i need to get one product for rim and one product for tire? Thanks a lot!

Message: I second the motion on *not* using fabric softener on towels (any towels, even the ones you use after you shower). It affects the material's ability to absorb water.
Thanks for the info on towels, by the way. I have some bargain specials that claim to be 100% cotton from when Venture went out of business, but they don't seem to absorb well and they did a number on my dark cherry Malibu paint. Now I know why. At least I can avoid doing the same thing to my Dakota.

Message: Dodgee-O,
As long as you wash regularly just use the same soap, different wash mitt on the rims. Any all-purpose cleaner can be used on the tires only. Any rim cleaner you buy will contain harsh chemicals which do a great job on brake dust but strip wax just as fast. I wash in this matter:
Always make sure vehicle & wheels are cool to the touch.
1. Wash entire vehicle but not the tires/rims.
2. Using a different wash mitt, use the same soap on the rims, washing one at a time, rinsing each one finsihed.
3. Spray one tire at a time, scrub w/a brush and rinse each tire. Some overspray will inevitably get on the rims but it will be minimal, they already will be wet and you won't be wiping the harsher cleaner onto the rims.
4. Dry entire vehicle.
Good luck.

Message: Take the tyres off, it takes but 15 minutes to get them all off and make for a much better and easier job. Also, you can clean the wells while they're off. Nothing like some nice dark black wells with shiney rims and tyres in them!

Message: My tires are a pain in the A$$ to clean. I have a 2001 Motorsports Edition Dak Club Cab. And I have the black rims with the GoodYear Eagle #1 tires. The bold faced yellow lettering is hard to keep looking good! They get dirty, and brake dust makes them look pale. Along with the rims, they are alright, but hard to clean, break dust sucks. I need something that will kinda, polish the rim, any ideas? also, ive also use a brush to clean my tires, but cant seem to clean the brown rings on the inside ring by the rim and the outside of tire itself, any ideas on that? thanks..
Wish I kept my 84 Cavalier! lol, had no clear coat.. paint was kinda peeling.. Dirt never even stuck to it! lol!
