Subject: which oil?
IP: Logged

Message:
I own a 93 4x4 Dakota that has over 102,000 miles and am having a tough time deciding on which oil to choose. Some people tell me don't waste my money on a full synthetic with a truck with that many miles. They also say that a truck with alot of miles like mine will definantly have leaks with a full synthetic oil. Then I hear some of you guys talk about Mobil-1 and how much you like it. Now I am running Valvoline Durablend 10W-30. Should I step up to 10W-40 since my motor has that kind of mileage?

If you're not loosing oil (burning, dripping, etc.) then you can run what you like. Valvoline DuraBlend is just fine and i've only heard of engines leaking from Synthetic when they were high mileage AND had pre-existing seal problems. (Dino oil also has a tendancy to "gunk up" the leaks and keep them from leaking for a while. Synthetic tends to clean the gunk out and then they leak.)

My '69 Javelin runs Castol 10w40 since, pretty much, day-one. (The engine was freshened up at 185K, due to a valve breaking though.)

Personally, I run Mobil-1 5w50 in my truck but have recently been running Redline 10w40. (Playing around with oil to see how the engine likes it.)

I previously owned a 90 Dak with the 3.9 before the days when it became a "magnum." At about 90k miles I started using Valvoline Max Life (I think that is what it is called) for older engines. I had a few minor leaks at the time. After I started using the oil, the leaks vanished. When I sold the truck it had over 120k on the clock. Still no leaks and never had to add more than a half a quart in 3k miles!

I wouldn't use synthetic either. I heard that it cleans it so good, that it'll "unplug" potential leak spots. I would just stick with Durablend, if you haven't had any problems. And depending where you live, I would stay with 10w-30 for summertime. Unless you live in the south or somewhere where it gets really hot, then use 10w-40

I live in N. California and it gets pretty hot sometimes in summer(up to 110-115F). I'll try out the 10W-40 Durablend. Thanks!

Andrew, Read this: go to mr2.com use their search and type: synthetic oil then
go to the third or fourth one down that says:
synth oil.txt
I've got a '92 with 120K miles I switched to synthetic oil figuring that , at least I can keep it from aging any further. ALSO, strongly consider synthetic trans fluid if you've got an auto trans. I did and went for it. I think that AMSOIL is the only company that makes trans fluid for Dodges. Go to their web site and sign up for their 'preferred customer' (or some such title) and get dealer prices for six months for $10.

Thanks larry, the info on that website was great. I think I will switch to Mobil 1 now. My owners manual recomends 10W-30, but since I am going to run a full synthetic and I have over 102K on my 93, I dont know if I should run a heavier weight. What are you running in your 92 Dakota? Is that Mobil 1 that claims it is formulated esspecialy to clean any good?

Hey larry, what do you mean amsoil is the only company making synthetic trans fluid for dodge? I thought you could use any trans fluid in dodges. Also, could you recomend a good synthetic gear lube for my diff's?

Does anyone know of a good filter? I cant find the Mobil 1 filter anywhere. I hear WIX and FRAM are good ones too, but which is best? Any store names that carry WIX or Mobil 1 filters would be greatly appreciated!

DON'T do Fram. They're the worst. If you can't find Mobil 1 see if you can find a K&N oil filter. Check the application guide. Mine uses an HP2004. I'm guessing yours would be the same.

Andrew, I'm running 5W-30. I'm in Tucson, Az. I went to the 5 because it pumps up faster when starting the engine. "starting the engine is the worst thing you can do to it" There's a company called NEO OIL that claims to have an additive that causes the oil to adhere to the surfaces so that they're still lubed when the engine is started. Try neo oil. com. During my research, I seem to remember reading that going to a heavier weight oil ..40 or 50, was actually counter productive...only used in race cars because of their tolerances, I think. I'd do some more research, Andrew. Just to make sure. As for cleaning an engine; synthetic oil, by it's own nature, will clean the engine.

Andrew, Chrysler products requir a specific transmission fluid. Check your manual. ATF+, I think. It has special friction modifiers in to prevent chattering of the clutches. Valvoline, for one, makes a PARTIAL synthetic trans fluid. As far as I know, amsoil is the only one that makes a 100%, pure, synthetic automatic transmission fluid. By it's very nature, because it has better thermal conductivity, and less friction, it'll run 10 to 50 degrees cooler. Every 10 degree drop in temp will double the life of your trans! If you don't have a trans cooler already, put one on. They're only about $50.

Andrew, Again, I'm going to suggest amsoil. (and I'm NOT a dealer.) They have synthetic gear lube. petroleum oils have a pressure break down of 500 p.s.i. Synthetic has 3000 p.s.i.!
As for filters; there are a few good ones on the market. The best ones have a thick media of cotton and/or fiberglass matting some that filter down to a few microns. Any particle less that 10 microns will not touch both surfaces of a bearing. Amsoil has an excellent fiter, which I'm going to, soon. They also have a bypass filter that filters down to 1/2 micron! It's about $180 but your oil will be analyticly clean. Go to their web site.
