Subject: Change 3.55 Rear-end to 3.92 IP: Logged
Message:
I didn't have time to wait to special order the Dakota I really wanted, and they had 95% of the options including paint on an in-stock one ... the rest is history.
The 5% I wanted was the 3.92 rear-end and now I want to do it. Any thoughts on this, I have already modded the truck but I am just not happy with the 3.55 (can you blame me!). I have the 8.25 axle, which I think most Daks do.
I have some costs on a Dodge 3.92, but they seem kinda high to me ($525CDN, ~$330USD).
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Message: I have the same dilemma. I never thought about
changing my axle ratio, now i am kicking myself
for not doing it in the first place.
However, after reading a muscle car publication, i
noticed at the dragstrip, the 3.55 was a common
ratio. As was 4.10. There were also alot of 3.21s.
Whats the deal? Am I just kidding myself that a
ratio change will give me more go? Its been
bugging me for a while.

Message: The right amount of change in ratio will increase your 1/4 mile times by as much as .5, but going to low will also hurt your top end power. Some guys with 4.56 gears are faster in the 1/8 but get spanked further down the track.
IMHO - I wouldn't go any lower then 4.11 if you want to drive your truck all the time.
You have to remember the low gears will make your 12MPG go into the single digits.

Message: You wont see much diff going from 3:55 to 3:92,I would wait for 4:10`s,you have the heaviest and slowest combo with the auto,IMO what the 4.7 needs is more low end TQ.I have the 4.7 with 3:55 5 speed and it pulls fine except steep steep hills it lacks low end grunt,I`m waiting to see how speedtweaks turbo setup works

I am looking for 1/8 mile performance gains, mostly for street fun ... no track for this daily driver.
I would be too worried about the 4.10s gas mileage, I drive about 40 mins (one-way) to work everyday @ about 50-60 mph. I figured the best trade-off would be the 3.92.

Message: Try getting a hold of some shorter tires.
For instance, I have 28' tall tires (255/65/15)and a 3.55 rear in my truck. If I went down to 25-1/2" tall tire (265/50/15), it would give me the same effect as having 3.92 gears with the stock tires.
Of course, then the speedometer would be reading high (72 at 65 actual speed).

Oops, never thought of that.
I suppose I shouldn't have just put on those Goodyear Eagle #1 Nascar 285/60/16's on the rear.

Message: I have a 99 Dak with the 3.55 rear end. I wanted to get bigger tires for my dak, but the guy at the tire shop told me that if I did that I should probably change the rear end in my truck to atleast the 3.92 rear end, because if I don't I will end up replacing the timing chain in my Dak numerous times, is this true?

Message: I went from 3.55s to 4.10s and considered it to be one of the best modifications I have made.
My MPG went from 12.5 MPG down to 12.2 MPG.
I believe that if I could drive now as I did before the change, my mileage would not change or would even improve. However, my truck pulls so well with the 410s I enjoy the HEAVY acceleration.
The QCs are heavy and slow on take offs. The 410s will give you a dramatic improvement.
I had a hard time deciding between 3.92s and 4.10s. Most everyone recommended that I go to 3.92s. However these recommendations were from R/C or C/C owners.
As a QC owner, I promise you, you will be pleased with the 410s.

Message: I went from a 3:55 one wheel drive to a 3:90 LSD close to two years ago. It was, without any doubts what-so-ever, the best bang for the buck. The acceleration off the line was greatly improved and highway passing has never been easier. There is no RPM range that you can't tell a dramatic difference.

Message: has anyone went from 3.55's to 3.92's with a 5speed? i know the 1st gear in the 5speed is lower than the one in the automatic, so it it worth it?
also, by going to a smaller tire to change the ratio, not only will it throw the speedo off, it will look kind of stupid with a big gap between the tire and wheel well IMHO.

Message: I have the 5 speed and when I changed the gears it definitely did make 1st gear lower. I still start off in first gear some times, but it's common for me to start off in second on level ground or when I do a "rolling stop". I can still get up to about 20 mph in first gear before I shift (about 4600 rpm).

Message: I would definitely do it again although this time around I would probably go with 4:10's as my new tires are a little larger than my stockers and I lost a little gearing.
As for 1st gear being too low, sometimes it is a pain in the arse, but more times than not I'm very glad to have a low first. Especially when I can sit in stop & go traffic and just leave it in first and idle along. Saves my clutch leg :-)
Out of the bolt-on mods that I've done to my Dak, the gears gave the best, most pronounced seat of the pants improvement.

This is nuts, I called the dealership to talk to them about maybe finding someone who had a 3.92 who might want to switch ... and they told me that it wasn't likely. So I told them to put together a price for me, based on the dealership doing the work (to preserve my warranty).
They came back at $725.00 for the 3.92 and $500.00 for installation, they figured it was a 5.5hr job. The parts price seems really excessive to me, and 5.5hrs labor .. I mean that is the better part of a day.
FYI, those prices are CDN ... so the price in USD would be roughly $454.00 and $313.00.
They trying to take me for a ride?

I don't know if this will be any cheaper for you being in Canada, but check out www.ring-pinion.com/ This is where I bought my stuff and they had the best price on the net or locally.

Message: In reply to R_U_FST2, have you checked at the local salvage yards? You could probably find a rear end for a Dakota with the 4.10 rear end and bolt it on in place of yours cheaper than that. If you know a mechanic that does work on the side that will save you half the labour. If you can't find the whole rear axle at a junk yard, they may have just the gears and you can swap em out with yours.
Just an idea.
