Message: Sometimes when I crank my truck up I get a small blue puff of smoke come out the exhaust. I think thats oil being burned. But its not constant it just blows out and then its clean. Could this be my valve stems? I dont think its not a blown head gasket or nothing. I have a 93 dodge dakota. 3.9

Message: More than likely it's the valve seats, not the stems. If it's just a little puff and the truck doesn't blow blue smoke at any other time (like during hard accelleration), then it's probally nothing to really worry about. Valve seats wear, it's a law of nature or something. I've seen vehicals start puffing at 100,000 miles and continue to run without problems for nearly another 100,000 miles.

Message: Yeah, valve seats are usually worn before the 100,000 mile marker. If I remember correctly, replacing them involves removing the Heads, valves, pressing the old seats out and putting new ones in. If your gonna do it, at that point you might want to look at new valves and possibly getting some mild head work done for better performance, as well as new stiffer springs.
Until you get to the point of noticable power loss and billows of smoke under high load, I wouldn't worry about it to much.
However, my Brother used to have a 1982 Olds Delta 88 with a 305 that had 160,000 miles on it. The valve seats were pretty crappy, but other than that the engine ran great. He put some of that (I think it's Mobil) special oil for 'high milage engines' in it, and the puffs stopped after a while. I was pretty impressed with that.
Either that, or try the next stage thicker oil. If your running 5w30, go to 10w30, or 10w30 to 15w30... my old Chevelle had to be run at 15w30 or else it had serious puffage and noise from collapsed lifters (It was a beater and a half). Thicker oil doesn't fit through the small holes in seals and gaskets as well as the thinner oil. -NEVER- go more than one range higher though.

Message: The problem is not the seats, its the valve guide stem seals. The valve guides get worn or your seals are not up to snuff anymore. The real fis is to have new valve guides but a cheap easeir fix is to get valve seals preferably the posi seals

Message: Valve guide seals. It wont' hurt a thing to keep on driving. A little oil leaks by these seals at long periods of shut down and gets burned off at start up. You can drive it for years like that with no problem. If you start smoking all the time, that's a different story.

Message: yeah moo I would go with answer #2 the valve stem seals get hard as it gets old. Then when your stopped the oil settles and leaks through the old seals and down the valve stem, thus sucked into the cylinder and burned like a 24X CDRW lol and yeah it involves removal of the valve covers and the springs the problem is you better be careful that the valve doesnt fall into the cylinder, you can get you old pops to break and drill out an old spark plug and weild a air hose fitting on it then hook up to some blow before removing valve spring pretty cool alt. to removing the head :-) "dont call me to help i'll be napping" pahaaa

Message: Yep, I'd go with the valve seals too. My old 91 318's burning oil and I had my valve seals changed by my mechanic. Cost me $195.00 parts and labor. Not bad if you ask me. In my case though it burns oil at start up but also at power up so the seals didn't help. I'm looking at a ring job sometime this summer.

Message: I bought a 2 year old Monte Carlo once. It puffed alot on start-up. Otherwise, it ran fine. I took the valve covers off to get a better look at the situation and was shocked to find both heads were totally packed with black sludge; most of the parts were totally encrusted to the point they were not recognizable. Well, I cleaned that mess up with a pick and shop vac over an 8 hour period. I could see why the oil was draining down the valve seals. I still can't figure out how that much sludge got that bad in two years, but it never smoked again after I cleaned out the heads. If you need new valve cover gaskets anyway, it might be worth a look-see.
