Subject: a big dummy question!! IP: Logged
Message: The "4-wheel drive" indicator light on the console stays on all the time on my 1989 Dakota. You folks seem to have the "Ultimate Knowledge Supply" here, and I was hoping that someone could tell me how to adjust, or repair the old girl!!
Thanks, You have a GREAT site!!

Message: well heres what i did
put it up on jackstands in your driveway and have the city fine you for junk/clutter
in all seriousnes find look on the passengers side of the front axle, there will be a vacuum motor type thing that will control the shifting fork and the shift collor inside (locks the front wheels in) locate this and take the vaccume lines off and start the truck and have somone hift from 4wd to 2 wd and see if the vaccum switches from one tube to another, if it doesnt the actuator on the transfer case is bad and needs replacing, if not take off the 4 bolts and carefully take the front plate off and remove the gasket without damageing it ($3.00 and a trip to the local dodge dealer for a new one) let the oil drain out into a pan or something, this is from what i can tell jsut some gear oil from the diffy, let it all drain out, take the whole plate off and the fork will come with it, take it out and clean it up. movge the forck back and forth untill it seems to move freely, after it is cleaned up put a thin coating of gera oil on all the parts and move it some more to get the oil on all the surfaces, put back together and hoep your light is off, the light sensor is also located on this front plat on the top and is more of a switch than asensor, when the shift fork moves over it pushes up a little button on the sensor and completeds the circuit and turns on the light,
here is a pick of the whole thing from my Haynes book (the pic may take a while to load)
and if this doesnt work post again and ill see whats up, also make sure your front diffy fluid is full and next oil change

Message: SuperBee is right. I did the same thing, and now my 4X4 light works great. I just want to add that you should inspect the shift motor assembly for corrosion. Mine had holes corroded in it that I needed to patch. Good luck!
