Subject: How do you polish aluminum? IP: Logged
Message: Saw these 15x8 stock wheels on ebay that have been polished and wondered how one would go about doing this? Looks like a nice lo-buck fix-up project!

Message: you can get the proper polishing compound from industrial supply houses, altho many do not carry it, and use a cotton, woven, buffing wheel. Be very carefull when you do this and polish just enough to get the job done as too much can put the wheel SEVERLY out of balance. The last time I did it I actually found everything I needed at a SEARS Tool outlet store, and I know that J&L a national mail order/telephone/internet industrial supplier also carries the supplies you need and have givin their customers many years of fast, usually 3 days or less, UPS delivery. Use a small buffing wheel that will fit a hand drill and you will be able to get into almost all the nooks and crannies easily. Hand polish the areas you can't reach easily. Also, allow several hours per wheel as this is very time consuming. Make sure the compound you buy is for aluminum as the wrong compound can remove prodidgious amounts of metal in a very short time.

Message: I used Mother's Mag Polish to polish the side cases on my motorcycle just as Bill The Cat explained.
If you are talking about the 16x8" rims for the Tire & Handling Package there seems to be a clear coat on them that will have to be removed first.

Message: I use a three step process when polishing aluminum: I use #3 final polish compound found at most home centers with a fairly hard cotton wheel. I then change to a soft cotton wheel and use Mothers Aluminum polish like Dave said. After that I then hand polish using Simichrome, which is the best polish I have found yet. Even if something isn't completely smooth the Simichrome will make it shiny. Another place to get all kinds of industrial stuff is McMaster Carr
