Subject: electric tailgate lock IP: Logged
Message: Hi all,
After losing some stuff out of the back of my truck I went looking and found a product called Powerbolt/ Powergate. It basically is an electric solenoid that locks the tailgate lever. It is plumbed into the existing door lock system.
What does the collective think of this product and is there a reasonable place to buy it from???
A group buy????
thanks in advance

Message: Steve,
I bought mine from www.central4wd.com...It cost $59.95..I do like the fact that it actuates with my electric locks in the truck. As far as wiring it in. I found it easier to interface into the locking system at the "Central Timer Module" in the drivers kick panel as opposed to where they recommend...

Message: I installed the Pop & Lock power tailgate lock which I also got from central4wd.com for $59.95. It works great and seems plenty strong. Installation took me about three hours but a lot of that time was fumbling around. To do it again might take an hour total. The instructions said to connect to two specific wires behind the driver side kick panel which I did. They also suggested bringing the wires inside the cab using the hood-release grommet in the firewall. I think that is their generic instructions for all trucks because on the Dakota, at least a 2002, its nearly impossible to get your hand anywhere near that grommet due to tight spaces. Instead, I went through the grommet in the floor of the cab where the emergency brake cable enters/exits. The grommet is under the edge of the carpet just beside where the driver's left foot would be if it were planted flat on the floorboard. I cut a small slit with a knife and pushed the wires through then sealed with silicon sealant. The wires come out right next to the kick panel so they are right where they need to be to connect to the power door lock wires. Works great.

Message: The Pop & Lock is the best bet. It works great, the only thing is to ensure that you proerly adjust it in the tailgate so that it does actually lock the handle. There are various holes in the assembly that can be used, you just have to make sure you use the correct ones. It took me about 4 hours but that was because I wanted to ensure the wires were properly routed from rear to front so I had to drop the skid plate around the fuel tank.

Message: A good part of my fumbling around was getting the holes in the lock's plate lined up properly. I think I had to remove the tailgate and realign the lock at least twice before I figured out what I did wrong (studying the picture in the instructions would have avoided that trouble). Probably 1/2 hour was spent carefully stripping away my line-x coating from the bolt heads that hold the lock on. I also wasted at least 1/2 hour trying to figure out how to bring the wire through the firewall before discovering the emergency brake cable grommet. Again, it wouldn't take me nearly as long now to do the install. Maybe less than an hour total.

Message: Where does the power/signal wire come thru the tailgate at? I am pretty sure there are caps on the sides of the gate, did you use those or what. Does it allow for a clean install or does it require some extra work? Thanks gang

Message: With the Pace Edwards power lock all the electrical connections for power are made behind the drivers side kick panel under the dash. I wire loom is used to route the wires through the firewall, under the truck and through a hole in the bottom of the tailgate.

Message: The Pop & Lock includes two sections of wire, one short and one long, joined with a plug. The short section goes into the tailgate and the long runs up to the cabin. The plug is there so the wires can be easily disconnected to remove the tailgate. There are drain holes on the bottom which can be used to run the wiring into the tailgate. I used the one on the far left, as you stand facing the gate, and ran the wires along the frame with the existing wiring up to just under the driver's seat, then went up through the emergency brake grommet to get to the driver's side kick panel.

Message: If memory serves me correct do the following:
1. Remove the plastic trim piece to the left of your left foot that hides lots of wiring and electronic boxes.
2. I believe the two wires you need are located in the center harness/plug of the three you will now be looking at the back of.
3. Using a 12V tester, poke into the ends of the plug/harness of each color specified and lock/unlock the doors with the door switch, looking to see when your 12V tester light lights up according to the function you are doing, locking or unlocking.
4. Connect to those two wires and button everything up
Good luck

Message: Excellent memory Big Blue QC, did my truck recently and your directions are flawless. The orange/black and the pink/black wires in the center plug/harness worked for my '02 CC.
P.E.'s directions are pretty vague about the final connection point- "parking brake area". I had to hit up Google pretty hard to find some better info.
I ran my wires up through the fender, out by the door hinges and through the big grommet that all the door wires run through to enter the cab right above the kick panel.

Message: Is there a way to adjust the lock. Mine seems to have too much slack and the tailgate can be opened just by pulling up hard on the handle. The instructions aren't too clear.

Message: i also have the pace edwards powergate... i think that you dont have it set up right... its probably not locking all the way... i had the same problem the plate wasnt sliding all the way to the left(not locking all the way) so i had to re-adjust it by dropping it down a hair plus it was alittle tilted.. once you get it adjusted right there is no way you can open it by "pulling Harder"

Message: The only thing I don't like about it is all you have to do is pop off the bezel and manually shift the bolt and you're in. Wish there was a way to make the bezel tamperproof.

Message: I was wondering if any of the power locks have a manual key lock as well.
I have an access roll top cover and it locks from inside. If that power lock fails...I am screwed.
And If BlackDak02 is acurate then why bother with the lock at all?
I like the idea of the power lock but it almost sound like a manual key lock would be better.
Please correct me if I am wrong or let me know if there is a combo lock available.
thanks in advance.

Message: I have a popnlock which I installed this week, I went and removed the bezel and tried to push the bolt back and it would not move, there is a cam that holds the bolt in place and the way the bracket is made it was impossibe to get a fish wire to move the cam.
If I am overlooking something please let me know, I do not want to loose my Alteza's or tailgate

Message: I was playing with my roll top cover last night. I found a way to get into it in an emegency... Does not give me a lot of confidence about its locking mechanism, but then again I can pick the lock on my tool box in 30 seconds or less with a paper clip.
The electic tailgate lock seems good enough for my application.
thanks for the replies.
