Subject: Charging system IP: Logged
Message: So I have discovered that my charging system isn't up to snuff anymore. I'm not sure if it is just with age the alternator is going south, but it isn't making enough juice at idle to charge the battery which leads to some pretty hard starts. Does anyone know of a more powerful replacement? Is there a different alternator that comes standard on the GenIII in some option package I could snag? BTW I have a genII 318.

Message: Heavy-duty charging option is a 136-amp alternator. That's the same setup available on all Dodge trucks including the Ram 3500 diesel.
Might try finding one in a boneyard and rebuilding it.

Message: Well my problom still persists after charging the batery completely. When I go to start it, it feels like it starts to crank once or make on revolution then stops. Usualy it seems as though if I put the key back to the off position it will then start right up. My next guess would be the ignition switch or the starter. Does anyone have any ideas how I can rule out one or the other?

Message: Sounds like a solenoid needs to be replaced, or the battery has shorted plates. I'd have teh battery tested, then the alternator. Most parts stores will do so for free. If they are good, you'll be out for a solenoid on the starter.

Message: Have the battery load tested first. Your battery can read 12 to 13 volts but have no amperege to spin the engine. Like posted above one of the cells could be shorted. Your charger will show charged but the battery can still be bad. Most auto parts stores will check this for free.

Message: I ahev already had it load tested at a battery supply house. The battery is ok, but the alternator isn't quite making enough to charge it, only enough to sustain it.

Message: To bad you can't do like we did in the old days.
Crank it up, take out the battery and if it still runs your OK.

Message: I HAVE A 91 DODGE DOKOTA WITH A 5.2 LITER V8. I AM HAVING TROUBLE GETTING THE BATTERY TO CHARGE OFF OF THE ALTERNATOR. BOTH ARE BRAND NEW. I ALSO BOUGHT A NEW VOLTAGE REGULATOR. THE AUTO PARTS STORE SAYS MY TRUCK DOESN'T HAVE ONE BUT I SHOWED IT TO HIM AND HE GAVE ME ONE FOR A 5.9, IS THAT ALRIGHT. i TOOK THE WIRES GOING TO THE REGULATOR AND TOUCH THE TO THE BATTERY AND MY BATTERY GAGE WENT FROM NOT CHARGING TO CHARGING ALL THE WAY TO 15 VOLTS. SO IS IT A WIRING PROBLEM OR A FUSE. EMAIL ME AT JUSTINGRANTHAM23@YAHOO.COM
