Subject: Did this damage my Tranny? IP: Logged
Message: I went to an Xpress lube to have an oil/filter, and transmission fluid/filter change. Long story short,,,,2hr.s later I leave. They used ATF+3! in my '01 4.7 (I forgot the name of this tranny,,automatic). This thing starts slipping soooo bad, I can barely climb up a slight grade!
It took me about a 5 mile round trip to make it back to the lube center (sits next to major highway,,etc..) The transmission slipping the entire time.
Did this do any severe damage to my truck? I'm getting a complete tune up,,and I believe oil changes for life too,,,all for free. But do I need to take her in after getting her back today for a check up somewhere?
The fluid was never low,,,just slipping very bad.
What do ya'll think? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Andy

Well, they should have used ATF+4 of course, and I would demand that they flush the system (not merely refill) and reinstall the correct fluid. You should have no problem getting this from them as DC specifically states that only ATF+4 is acceptable for the 45RE. Watch them do this to be sure that they really use ATF+4 this time.
But that being said, I doubt very much that using ATF+3 would cause the slipping you mentioned. More likely the transmission was improperly filled (low), which definitely can cause slipping. I can't say whether the transmission is damaged but I tend to doubt it since you didn't put too many miles on it, although slipping the whole way definitely isn't good. After they put the ATF+4 back in I would give it a good road test and see if you can detect any problems... if not then you are probably OK. If you are really worried you could insist that they pay to have a DC dealer check it out, but going into the tranny in the absence of an obvious problem may cause more problems than it solves.
Sorry about the bad luck... you gotta watch those guys...

Message: I really can not trust any shop anymore; I havn't found one yet that does anything right -- here that is.
I asked a shop who was fixing a flat for me but this last Tuesday, "please torque the lugs all to 100 for me will ya -- all the rest are that way." "Sure thing," the man said. I get it back, I go home and I check it, as always, and it's torqued to about 110-115 and filled to 40-41 psi on 35 psi rated tyres (yes I did check them cold too; imagine how high they were when I was driving!). It's just a damn flat you fukkers, can't you do something as simple as that! I bet they didn't even tighten in a nice star patten. If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself, but things like automatic transmissions! Hell no can I do something like that, so I am FORCED to trust them! You might want to see if they belong to that Automatic Transmission Certification Orginization or whatever that thing is. They might like to hear about something like this... Shops who are stupid and/or careless deserve to be put out of business.
I would be pretty pissed if that was me and demand it be fixed and my transmission looked into -- prefferably not by them. At least it was only 5 miles that idn't too too bad, but still; it's their fault and they must pay for their mistake, simple as that. You fuk up, you accept your mistake, don't let them just brush you off.
World has too many people that don't accept their own mistakes as it is, liberal bastards.
End of rant.

Message: I wonder if they filled it up all the way. My understanding is the ATF+4 is ATF+3 with an antifoamer. If that's the case then I don't think they put enough fluid in the first place!

Message: Well the manager stayed like 4hr.s late for me,,and got the entire contents dumped all over him as I watched (hahahaaa). But the wasn't any kind of burnt odor,,or anything visually (I got to crawl down into the pit). He assured me he'll take care of any problems this causes, and I'm getting it writing this afternoon. I'm on my way to go over right now.
Dakota/Cali- I'll have to check w/my guy on the price. But he can beat anyone,,,,Let me know if you're interested. I picked mine up for $350 total.
I'll post back on here,,,hmmmmmm,,,Monday. Got some liv'n to do!

Message: It sound like they didn't have it full. You didn't drive it far enough to burn or damage anything. The reason it slipped is cuz there wasn't enough fluid to turn the torque converter if you only wen't 5 miles you should be fine.I've work on heavy duty trannys an lack of fluid or fluid change is the biggest cause of problems.

Message: Dumping all over him sounds like he fumbled the pan. In that case they didn't flush the tranny and you have mixed fluid in your truck.

Message: ATF+4 is a "Semi-Synthetic" version of ATF+3.
However, i'd take it back and demand that they change the fluid to the correct one.

Message: I know a guy tjhat had to use ATF+3. We were out 4wheeling and he punctured the pan. He lost all the fluid in the pan. I put a bolt and nut in the pan and sealed around it with rtv. We filled it with what we had. ATF+3!!! It made it off the trail and 50 miles home no problem. He left it in for a few more days of daily driveing. He had to wait for a new pan to arive. It worked fine in his trans. We put ATF+4 in it when we picked up the new pan. His did not slip at all!! I doubt it is the fluid if the truly used atf+3. Are you sure that they did not use dextron and add an additive?

Message: they more than likely did not get the filter sealed properly. the 45rfe has 2 filters in it. one threads on the other has to be pushed into place it has a rubber o-ring style seal which needs to be put on before the filter. if they installed that wrong which is probably what happened it will cause the trans to act up.
