Subject: No gasket?!!??!!

I seem to have an exaust leak under the hood of my 99 3.9 auto. It makes a fast "pist, pist, pist pist!!" noise when the engine is cold and you can smell raw exaust fumes. I believe it is leaking at one of the exaust manifolds. But i called the dealer to check for gaskets for the manifolds and was told there is no gasket!!! He said "yep, metal on metal". How cheap is that?? I've never heard of that before, no wonder why its leaking! I then loosened and then retorqued the exaust manifold bolts and it still leaks. So if there is no gasket to leak through, then what is wrong?? Is the exaust manifold warped?? Cracked?? Its definetly coming from the exaust manifold, i know that kind of leak when i hear one. Think it might be time for headers!!

This isn't a new way of doing things, my 74 Dodge Dart 318 was done the same way. If the surfaces are machined to tight enough specs, you don't need a gasket, when NEW. The good news is, it is a small leak without a gasket, so adding a gasket will fix it. I used header gskets, but that was in 1976.

Well, it must be a dodge way of doing things so i've never seen it before.....always had GMs. So whats up, do you think it warped a bit?? It seemed to start leaking after towing two snowmobiles all the way accross ny state at like 70 mph and out of OD most of the time (@ 3000 rpms for much of the trip). The engine never got hot but could the exaust manifold gotten hot enough to warp or crack??

When was the last time you changed your plugs? What I am saying is that it may not be the exhaust. If you changed your plugs recently, one of them may not have set right. That happened to me in my old S-10. The tune-up place didn't put one of the plugs in right and it started amking the fffit, fffit, fffit noise after a couple hundred miles. I thought it was an exhaust leak too, so did the dealer, but upon closer inspection, the leak was from the spark plug that wasn't seated right....

Haven't changed plugs since a year ago but i'll check that anyways........but it looks like there is a lot of carbon staining around one of the exaust ports on the drivers side manifold.....shall have to remove it and see if its warped or cracked......

On your 3.9 you should be able to use a header gasket on it. I'm not a 3.9 guru but the ones I've seen are just a small block with 2 cyls chopped off. Just get a header gasket for a 318,360 mag motor and chop off the extra port with a pair of scissors and put them on. Check the manifold for cracks while you have it off.

Victor Reinz exhaust manifold gasket part # MS12453

OE might not have it but us aftermarket guys do
I beleive NAPA carries Victor Reinz Gaskets

If anybody else needs any part numbers for gaskets, bearings or engine parts let me know and I'll see what I can do

Clevite 77: IS that part # for a 3.9 or a 318?? I also noted that all the parts stores i called said the exhaust gaskets are only shown up to 1996 models for the 3.9 dakota.....why did they decide to do away with it?? More cost cutting crap??

a cheaper alternative would be to take the manifolds off and block sand them with about a 180 grit paper. when enough carbon gets on the surfaces, it wont seal right.

cant use 318/360 gaskets... the 3.9 has a different exhaust/intake port configuration. it has one exhaust in the front and two in the back on one side and the opposite on the other side while the 318/360 have two in the middle.

Welcome to modern auto design.

If it's warped it can be machined. If it's cracked it may be able to be welded.

Remove it, inspect it, fix it (with an older gasket if you want). torque it back on to specs.

hey SloDak39 it should be for the 3.9L, in fact I just verified that with the Chrysler Gasket specialist. Now this part number is for a Victor Reinz gasket, (99' 3.9L exhaust manifold gasket) it will come in a kit (both left and right sides.

Let me know if this doesn't work out I'll see what I can do
