Subject: Lockiong Gas Caps set off engine light.. IP: Logged
Message: I replaced my gas cap with a locking gas cap from NAPA a few weeks ago and I recieved a check engine light shortly after.
I checked the code (if you do not know how to do this, it's by turning the key to the acc. then off, then acc. again, off again, then acc. once more. This will give you all the codes) and I recieved the code P 0455, which in the manual states it is a large leak in the evaporative system. Which includes the gas cap, part of gas tank assembly, and a leak detection pump. I tried switching the gas cap out to be sure, but it didn't change. I took it in to my local dealer and they told me it was the gas cap and to leave it on there for a week and it would "learn" again and the light would go off.
Is that true, that to get rid of a check engine light it has to learn, or did they pull a check engine light bulp, lol? Has anyone else encountered this?
Thanks,
Mike

Message: I got this code from not turning my gas cap all the way. You might want to check and see if it on tight. If it is under warranty, have the Dealer reset the light.

Message: Wow, never heard of a car learning to get rid of a check engine light. Their scan tool should be able to erase the code from memory. Or try reseting your PCM.

Message: Yeah, I thought the learning gas cap thing was kinda iffy, but it can damn well learn to live with leqaking vapors! It never goes away, I think it goes to a history...
