Message: you don't have to look into the most expensive ones.
ost of the Radar detectors read all of the same bands. X, K, Ka and Laser. Some of the more expensive ones are a joke cause they have a bunch of stuff on there that will never be used...I went with the Escort 6800 that was on sale at CarToys for $149. It serves it's purpose and it can detect the radar at almost 1/2 mile away....

Message: getting caught with a jammer is much worse. you could always stay in a pack of cars when you use it but how likely is it that you will always be in a pack of other vehicles?

Message: Well, These so called jammers are junk. They do not emit any RF energy at all. There used to be true jammers but that company went out of business. They had to quite makeing them or face the FCC. At no time can you legaly transmitt any signal that's sole purpose is to interfer with another legal signal. You could make a jammer form a microwave magnatron and a switching power supply plus a few other simple circuits. The idea would be to flood the area with as much RF energy and harmonics in the freq. range being used against you. You could mount one on the front and one the rear of the car. I must caution you that that much micro wave energy floating around you constantly could increase your chances of cancer.

Message: Stepdogg,
If you're going to go after a detector, definitely get one that masks its presence. I have seen ads that show this feature-special circuitry. If the r-d is illegal in your state, the police probably have radar detector 'detectors', a device that looks for the signal transmitted by all electronic devices that matches the signature of an r-d. Mid to upper price/quality to get better selectivity, but remember too many whistles and bells cost money.
Fast is fun, but practice it with caution and where you'll only make yourself dead if something bad happens.
I live on Oregon and we don't have restrictions on detectors. I've got a better grade BELL and like its functions. Used it all the time with my former car ['76 Jag with 383 Chev] ALL the time. Lately, though, my driving has been much more conservative, so I don't use it as much. Age, I guess.

Message: The Valentine One has been for years, and still is, the top radar detector. See the Feb 2002 Car & Driver test for details:
http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/features/2002/february/200202_feature_detectors.xml
If you are going to use it where illegal, its also good to know that in tests the V1 was not detected by police radar detector detectors.
V1s are bought direct through http://www.valentineone.com.

Message: Pbash is right. Every year Car and Driver tests all the detectors and every year the Valentine One comes out on top. None of the others are even close. I used to be in traffic court every 6 - 9 months for speeding tickets. Although I'd always get off or cut a deal (there are some benefits to being a lawyer) it was still a pain to have to go into court and go through all the motions. Since I got my Valentine One about two years ago I haven't been stopped once. The V1s aren't cheap, but at least your getting a good product for the money. The others are practically worthless.

Message: Besides their sensitivity, the V1's display is invaluable. Being able to tell which direction the radar source is coming from and the number of distinct sources is great. You won't find that on other detectors because Valentine has it patented.

Message: I have a Cobra (model escapes me) radar detector and it costs a fraction of what the V1 does and does the same thing. It detects all the bands including laser with 360 degree protection. It won't tell me which direction the radar signal is coming from, but that doesn't matter. If it goes off, I'm slowin' down! It's also invisible to VG-2 (radar detector detector) too. I've had it for 3 years now and I've never received a ticket.

Message: I've been using radar dectors for 18 yrs. Started out with a old Escort(that old BIG one.) Used most others since then.
I tried the V1 and did not like it in the city because of the busy false signals. On the highway it is great.
I found my way back to the Passport line and currently use the 5600 that has a LCD display. My next one will be a top of the line Passport. They just seem to fit my taste better.
Bottom line is they all work, some better then others, and keep you informed and away from ALOT of speeding tickets.
