Subject: Install Spark Plugs IP: Logged
Message: Any tips on putting in new spark plugs in a 4.7L?
How long should it take? Easiest way to get at the plugs? Suggestions or links would be great!

Message: It is an ABSOLUTE PAIN for something that should be a simple maintenance event. Nothing complex, just a pain. You will have to remove the air hat and the flexible tube that connects the hat to the airbox. You need to do this so you can push two AC tubes out of the way, which run underneath the air hat and directly over the #2 and #3 coils. With the air hat out of the way, loosen the mounting clips for the two AC tubes that run right over the #2 and #3 coil. Push the AC tubes out of the way to get at those coils. Undo the bolts that hold the coils in place, then unplug them and set them aside. Then it is a fairly long reach down to the plugs themselves, requiring a few inches of extension on your ratchet wrench. If I remember correctly (it has been 6-7 months since I did this last), you might need to use an extension with a joint in it due to space limitations, particularly on the #8 cylinder. Took me close to an hour, but I was nosing around looking at other stuff under the hood while I was doing it. Enjoy!
