Subject: New R/T Question. IP: Logged
Message: I am about to order a Dakota R/T. What are the general feelings about options. I will eventually mod this truck over from intake to exhaust tip. should i bother with the heavy duty cooling package? i wont be towing anything with this truck.
We have a Durango R/T and I am familiar with most of the options available, however, performance-wise, I didnt know how the engine block heater or heavy duty service group would affect the upgradeability of the truck.
I am open to suggestions about these kind of things as I dont expect to actually put it on order for another week.
Thanks in Advance
p.s. this is a cool web site and everyone here seems to get along pretty well.

Message: Don't bother with those options, the stock truck handles those problem areas just fine.

Message: I would suggest the Tranny Cooler! The 46RE is not the best tranny, the cooler will save you some headachs down the road.

Message: Instead of the heavy duty service group as a whole, just get the heavy duty cooling option, and heavy duty electrical option. No need for a block heater unless you live in extreme cold temperatures. But the cooling and electrical are always good things to have. Especially if you plan on modding the truck and using an electric fan. Other than that it's all personal preference as far as the finer things in life like A/C which will sow you donw a little, or the power door locks and such.

Message: The A/C is now a standard thing with the R/T (actually its standard on the sport too), so no chance in ditching that. I'd get the HD cooling too but personally wouldn't worry about the electrical. I think the HD cooling and HD electrical is what makes up the HD service group, you can't actually get the HD electrical anywhere other then the HD service group. The R/T group now even includes a soft tonneau cover.

Message: Here's some little options to think about - if you don't order them now, it's virtually impossible to add them later.
HD Cooling: You definitely want the transmission cooler with the 46RE.
Overhead Console Computer: Electric compass and fuel metering, etc. If you don't order this from the factory they don't include the wiring to add it later (a LOT of wires)
Steering Wheel Radio Controls: A little option but useful if you're going to keep the factory radio.
Beyond that it's personal preference as far as primary options go... P/L, P/D, A/C, cruise, light group, etc...

Message: Like other guys on this post, I would recommend getting the Heavy Duty Cooling. Even if you aren't towing, it doesn't hurt having everything run a little cooler. It will help things last a little longer and it is good for piece of mind. I live in Northern Ohio and frequently traveled to Michigan over the winter. It got down to near zero and I don't have the engine block heater and the truck started right up. If I lived farther north where it got that way everyday in the winter, I would probably get the block heater, though. Good luck.

Message: thanks for all of the input.
so far, i think i will get the block heater, since I live in northern virginia. I havent been here long enough to know that I will need one during the winter, but I just want to be on the safe side.
sincity r/t, does that mean that the steering wheel audio controls wont work with an aftermarket radio. the stock stereo is the first thing that I am going to toss out. which brings me to another question, should i get the upgraded speaker option. the reason i ask this is because i was wondering if the factory cuts the speaker holes the same way with either option. it might save me some work down the road to have the factory do the cutting.
thanks again for all the input, you guys have been really helpful.

Message: Douglas,
H-D goodies usually good. Adding later is real expensive and a pain, and more HP equals more HEAT!
Have too much fun,...D

Message: Some aftermarket head units will work with the steering wheel controls you just have to limit your search a little if you want them to keep working. If you plan on ditching the factory stereo then in order top get the infinity speakers (which cost $418-475) you also have to get one of the upgraded head units ($110-225 more). $600 in the aftermarket goes a long way, although the factory Infinity Gold in my old Grand Cherokee was all I ever wanted. I've never heard a Dakota Infinity though.

Message: As long as the aftermarket stereo you put in has a remote control, you can still use the steering wheel rado controls. Also, a lot of new aftermarket head units are coming with built in adapters. If it dosn't have this, PAC makes a adapter that will allow you to still use the steering wheel controls. What all do you plan on doin with your stereo?? I think the infinity option is a good option. Even if you plan on upgradeing. Without it, you will not have tweater mounting locations unles you make one. With he infinity option you will have the tweater mounts already in the door panel. And you might even be surprised with the factory infinity speakers and decide to keep them.
