Message: This ought to make a few people laugh...
While installing the new 180 tstat in the Dak on Sunday, I noticed that the gasket between the TB and the air cleaner had a 1" piece missing. As a result, the top the TB and the valves were coated with crap that had been sucked in bypassing the K&N filter. It need a cleaning in a bad way.
This morning I pulled the Dak about halfway into the garage and turned it off. I popped the hood and removed the air cleaner. I opened the door to the Dak and reached in to fire her up so I could spray the cleaner on the TB. Well, dumba$$ me left it in 1st. The Dak didn't just lurch forward and stall, she started and drove forward about 10 feet before hitting a picknick table and pushing it into the garage wall. I cracked 3 2x4 studs on the wall, pushed my new popane grill into my '72 Caddy, and darn near tore the rudder off my kayak hanging on the wall beside the truck. Oh, I also destroyed the driver side headlight assembly on the Dak! Argh!
Well, since I'm looking. Any suggestions on replacement bulbs for the headlights?
Cheers,
DC

Message: That story really sucks, at least you can laugh and nobody was dragged along under the truck. I've heard stories of people pinning themselves to the garage wall that way. My neighbor started her 64 Galaxy for the first time in 2 years last summer. When she started it and put it into reverse she realized all the brake fluid had drained out, and also the gaskets in the carb had dried up and cracked. It was dumping in feul, and had no brakes. That 390 was tearing back and before she could get it back in park she was 1/2 way across my lawn and crapping her pants! She told me all about it, and since I wasn't mad about the "scar" to my weeds, she laughed too.

Message: How did that happen? My 97 has to have the clutch in to start it. Did you have the clutch in to start and then immediatley let off? I was just wondering. Im sorry that happened b/c that is just bad luck.

Message: I didn't have the clutch pushed in. In fact, the only part of me that was in the truck was my arm and shoulder. The older Daks don't have the safety switch on the clutch. They just start right up. I guess Dodge felt that the engine didn't have enough power to start if it was in gear, and they probably weren't counting on stupid people like me. :)

Message: I used to work for a contractor that had a 1972 Ford F150 pickup. The switch or the solenoid wouldn't work one morning up at his house. So I get a prybar from the tool box, open the hood and short across the starter solenoid to start it. It went into fast idle, I put away the prybar, then headed to the shop to get the tools I was needing for the day. The drive was quite steep and the truck was nose uphill. While in the garage I hear a terrible crunching sound of collapsing metal. Going outside, I find the truck down the hill and against a tree with the tailgate and bed caved in nearly to the rear axle. I got my butt chewed in a royal way for not ensuring the truck was in park (which I did) or setting the parking brake (which I did). We sent the truck to the body shop to be repaired.
A week later, I was driving the 28,000 lb GMC cabover truck through town and noticed the pickup sitting out front of Ted's Transmission shop. When I got back to the office I asked the boss why the pickup was at the transmission shop.
He said, tight lipped, that the body shop had finished the work, started the truck and stepped away for a moment. The thing went into reverse on its own and hammered another customer's car.
All I could say was, "Really? Imagine that..." and walked out.
A lady friend of mine had a 1972 Mercury Caliente that did the same thing. I guess Ford Motor Company had a recall that year for vibration causing the automatic shift linkages to creep into reverse from park.
Drum brakes are mechanically energized and made more effective when the shoes contact the drum and are rotated forward slightly by the contact. That means they don't work as well in reverse. SO that expalins why the parking brake didn't hold against the engine in reverse on the steep hill.
