Subject: Help! O2 Sensor IP: Logged
Message: I took my dak in today to get it checked out. They said I need a new oxygen sensor at $200 (140 for the part and 60 for labor). I don't usually trust service people without checking it out myself.
Is there any way I can check to see if the oxygen sensor is bad? How much does a new one cost and can I put it in myself? The guy said they're welded in and require a special tool.
The truck idles rough and is getting crappy mileage. I changed plugs and rotor, checked PVC etc. but it's running rich and my new plugs are now black.
Thanks in advance for ANY help!

Message: yes you can check it out if you have a multimeter. i beleive the signal wire on it is the grey one. tap into it and with the truck running you should read a voltage between 0 and 1 volt. you will probably have to rev up the engine while you are reading it, at idle it won't hardly put any voltage off.

Message: I have a 95 3.9 and the part was 60$ from NAPA.
It does help to replace it about every 60,000.
Its tough to get too on the 6, but it can be done with hand tools. I have never heatrd of an O2 sensor welded on.
I'mnot sure about the 8 though. hope this helps.

Message: If it's the forward O2 sensor, the O2-SIMM will not work (neither will a KatBox).
Replace the forward O2 sensor at right about 60K miles to prevent any excess mileage problems (or wierd engine problems).
That '91 O2 sensor isn't more than $60-$70 and takes about 15 minutes to change out. You can buy the socket for it at any PepBoys, AutoZone, or Advanced Auto (Kragens as well). Connect it to a 3/8" drive ratchet, remove the sensor connector, place the socket over the O2 sensor, and remove it. (It'll be rather tight as heat pretty much cooks it into the threads...it'll come loose though.) Install the new one with the anti-sieze compound (most of them include a small packet with the new O2 or it's already on the threads). Reconnect the O2 sensor, reset the PCM, and drive away.

Message: Thanks everyone. Stupid me, I didn't check the computer codes before taking it to the shop. Sure enough, flashed a 51 indicating O2 sensor was stuck in full lean position.
Getting to the sensor was a bitch, but it came out with a little WD40 and a crescent wrench.
New Bosch sensor was $43.99. Popped it in, reset the computer and runs like a champ.
