Subject: 5.2 Engine Noise IP: Logged
Message: Hey all,
I have 99 dak with the 5.2 and the other day it started to make a weird sound when i tried to accelerate with a load on the engine. ie when at wot with trany in 5th gear and speed about 45-50 mph. it has made this noise occasionally when going up a hill in too high a gear right before the downshift but never as often as it is now. i bought the truck with 56,000 and it now has 74,000 mostly highway miles but i do get on it once in a while when the mood strikes me. i don't know what is wrong it sounds like lifter rattle but this is not it as the noise comes from the lower/front of the engine. any help greatly appreciated.

Message: Mark,
I have the same year/motor of truck that you have but a automatic. I think that you are reffering to what is called a spark knock, or a pinging sound. I had this sound at 27,000 and had the motor rebuilt under warranty. A rod bearing was changed out. At 55,000 this noise started up again any time I was in top gear before it gears down. Took it in and the dealer said, well its been almost 60K, have you considered a full tune up???($300) I don't think so. A mechanic told me out side the shop to change out the spark plugs. I did that and the noise went away. All of the plugs showed to be buring a little rich and the gapp on all of the plugs was around .06 insead of .04. Good luck

Message: Thanks Mason
Maybe i will try those autolites that everyone is using and see if that helps prolly wouldn't hurt to change the wires again either.
thanks

Message: Is it a header or exhaust manifold leak ? The small ones only make noise under light load. A leak can be found if you look around the maifold where it bolts to the head ,what you are looking for is a tan or white dust coating. Most leaks like this are small and won't get bigger fast (no exhaust manifold gasket to blow out).
