Subject: Vacuum noises IP: Logged
Message: I have noticed recently that during acceleration I can hear a vacuum noise coming from the engine bay. This noise is quite noticeable and annoying. I haven’t noticed any performance problems with the engine, and she feels as good as the day I bought ‘er. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? How can I detect a leak or find out where it’s coming from? I’ve tried revving the engine from under the hood and can’t hear the noise; it seems to be present only when I am driving.

Message: I had the problem once, the truck had no power at all, only enough to go about 35. It made a noise like a vacuum, but later when i came back to drive it to a shop, it ran fine. I think it may have had somthing to do with the cat going out since that went out at rougly the same time. but whatever it was, stopped.

Message: Just a thought, but do you have any kind of aftermarket intake setup? Have you done, or had someone do, any work on it?

Message: You can detect or find a vacuum leak by carefully spraying a product like WD-40, starting fluid, or any combustable propellant around where you think the leak may be. You will hear the engine rev when you get to the leak. One time all that was around was hairspray...It works also if it uses butane or something similar as a propellant. Just use sparingly.
