Subject: Child Seats in Club Cab IP: Logged
Message: I am a non-owner who is thinking of getting a Gen2 Dakota for occassional use. I need to be able to haul my 1 year old around, which requires a child seat. Has anyone installed one in the rear of an Extended Cab? Are the seat belts adequate for rear and/or forward facing? And are there any special tricks to doing it right?
From what I have seen, I really like the older Dakotas, but I need to make sure I can use it as I need to. I cannot afford a new one, though the quad cab would be great. I appreciate your advice.

Message: Let me tell you!
When I first bought my dakota, a 96 ext cab 4x4 V6. I had only one little one. That worked out ok, even the second one wasnt to bad, but three...
But really, The child seats are difficult to fit in the dakotas but they do fit. If you have the seat you will be using, take it to a used car dealer and try it in the cab. Do this if at all possible. That way, you will know for sure it is in there safely.
My only other recommendation is, if you do buy one, get one with a V8. The gas milage difference is too little to notice, but the power is.

Message: Hey,
I have a gen III and I have a 19 month old. We got a Century NextStep carseat and that fits in the back seat pretty good. The cool thing is it ranges from 22 to 80 pounds, so he will be ok for a while.
The only problem is that we have another on the way and I have no idea how we are gonna get another one back there.
But in answer to your question (sorry I went off on a tangent), I think that the NextStep carseat will help you out. The base isn't super big and it fits on the narrow rear bench.

Message: I have a '93 CC and have used a carseat in the center of the rear seat (facing forward) for the past 4 years.
I tried other positions but none seemed stable enough. (Also jammed a rolled-up towel in the gap between the benches for balance)
As the kids grow they have to put their feet on the center armrest (Gen II)
So when my oldest got too long for the carseat - (almost 4 yrs old) he got to move up to the front seat with the regular shoulder/lap belt.
Now my youngest is 2 1/2 and darn near too big for the carseat.
I'll be bringin' home a QC when the '03s come out this fall!
P.S. Got over 160K on my '93 CC - still strong

Message: Thanks everyone for you advice. I am working on getting a Dakota now. We'll have to see what pans out; I am trying to sell my wife's 93 Accord to get the money for the Dakota. (She drives a Grand Caravan now, so guess who gets the useless coupe...)
Anyway, I appreciate your feedback. :)

Message: Well... you could always ride the kid up front, but just be sure to turn the front passenger airbag off.

Message: Someone will probably be offended by this, but I plan use the Dakota only when the Caravan is in the shop and for hauling stuff. I am trying to get an older Miata (cheap) for my daily driver. That being the case, the child seat will probably live in the back seat. I have thought about putting it up front, but that would be a last resort. It seems from the replies offered, a child seat will fit just fine.
I just wish it has the LATCH tether points that the new cars and vans have. Man they are easy to install a child seat in! Two or three clips and you're done in 20 seconds.
Since you mentioned it, do the 94-96s come with an airbag kill switch? I thought those only came out in the last 3-4 years.

Message: Correct! Gen II's (91-96) did not come with the airbag switch.
