99 dak club cab 95,000 kms/60,000 miles. Ive noticed a groaning noise in my dakota so I jacked up the front my truck to check the wheel bearings. I grabed the left front tire and a gave it a wiggle. What the f&*@ ! It was loose! The nut that actualy holds the hub/bearing assembly on was loose. Dont those idiotic son of B$%^&'n enginers believe in cutter pins oh no that would be extra wieght and assembly cost to the truck.. so forget safety. Ive determined the NYLON LOCK NUT came loose from the bad wheel bearing. Which went south because it is one of those wonderfully egineered sealed bearings actually 2 of them stuffed in side by side ( the inner seal has actually rotted away). Why even bother buying this new junk! Any way back to my story. The wheel bearing is diffently fu-bared. I am takin it to the dealer this week as the service manager agrees with me about and these wonderfull Dodge egineers. They must have been Rocket Scientist before they worked for Dodge. Sorry if I have offended anyone but I think that it is pretty sad when a wheel bearing can't last 60,000 kms. I gaurantee that people are driving with bad wheel bearings and dont even know it. Also to make matters even worse Dodge bastard sized the two bearings that are pressed in to the hub so you cant buy them and you need to buy the entire hub $200.00 a side. It will be intersting to see what the dealer will do to help me out.

Sounds like your problem is a product of neglect and not a bad design . The wheel bearings should have been inspected at regular intervals ,the same time the brakes were inspected ,I think every 12,000 miles in your case.The bad seal would have been spotted with a proper inspection ,the loose nut is more likely an effect of the bad bearing and not the cause of the bad bearing.Your owner's manual tells you to have the brakes and suspension inspected for very good reasons, many times an inspection can spot a small problem before it becomes a big one.

ACE, I concur. ...and unhappy, "fu-bared" isn't the correct usage. That would make it F'ked up beyond all recognitioned.... eh? Your truck's suspension is FUBAR becuase it wasn't properly maintained, not fu-bared. ;o)

Yes, the engineers DO design things to brake, and they do it on purpose. It's a b!tc# ain't it?

My right front wheel bearing is failing. I Check them during tire rotation. Found the thing leaking grease. Have appointment on Friday to have it replaced under warranty.
Never had a vehicle with a wheel bearing failing at less than 30,000 miles before. Should have lasted the lifetime of the truck, like they used to.

Dave, you're right. They should last the life of the truck...oh and the ball joints are supposed to as well...especially when sealed.
Dealer replaced both of my hub assemblies at about 15K miles. Wonderful craftsmanship. ;)
Should be in for a tranny repair this month! Woo hoo! I don't feel it's so much neglect in maintenance, as it is neglect in engineering/production. I guess it really is all about the money...oh well...will have new experiences to think about when buying that next vehicle.

I've also had a bearing fail on me, at 70,000 mi. The seal was totally destroyed when I looked at it doing my brakes. My mechanic gets all his parts from the dealer and it was $150 each.

From what I understand the front bearings are to not be touched. they are to last up to 100,000 miles. and are maintenance free. I agree I can see some grease on mine also, but the engineers for some reason felt a dust cap was not needed on this design. I wish there was a dust cap. But I also check mine from time to time.
