Subject: Resetting my engine light...
IP: Logged

Message:
I just changed my spark plugs yesterday on my 2000 Dakota Club cab, SLT, 4x4, 4.7 V8. Now my check engine light is on. Is this just because I did something to the engine, so it came on. And can I reset it myself, 'cause I really hate to take it to the dealer just to have the engine light reset. Thanks...

Disconnect the battery, hold the key in the start position for thirty seconds, turn the key back to the off position, reconnect the battery, and you should be set.

Disconnect the NEGATIVE side of the battery.

BTW: 15 seconds will do the trick. ;)

I always light to see the OBD (trouble) code before resetting the "check engine light". The code will allow you to see why the computer tripped the light. (Go to "OBDii.com" for code translations).

All you have to do is turn your ignition switch from the "off" to the "on" postition three times. On the third time leave the key in the "on" position and the trouble code will appear in the odometer window.
