Subject: Draincock on '99 Dak IP: Logged
Message: Tried to drain and flush the cooling system on my '99 5.2 CC yesterday, only to find that the draincock only moves a quarter turn counter-clockwise (I didn't want to force it), and that no coolant comes out the little drain nipple below it.
In anybody's experience, does the draincock go more then a quarter turn?

Message: Yep – know the pain on this one. Had the same “problem” with the 99 5.9 Durango a few months back. The draincock is not a traditional one, as most of us are familiar with. In the old days, one would turn this thing (copper) and the fluid would drain nicely. Once done, tighten. Nowadays, Chrysler, in their “infinite wisdom,” allows you to back this thing out about ¼ turn. Then, you’re supposed to pull straight back for a complete drain. Trouble is, when you turn this thing ¼ turn, you “rupture” the rubber o-ring that’s between the draincock and the bottom of the radiator. This requires a replacement. Don’t be fooled by your friends at the dealer – they probably want $7 for this thing, and it’s only a 10-cent (if that) part, found in anyone’s tool chest. Be careful re-inserting the draincock, as it will tear the o-ring on the way in! Ridiculous!! So, find a couple that will fit correctly. Check for leaks. I thought the job was done (the first time) and damn it, I tore it going back in. The following morning, anti-freeze everywhere. What a PITA! Advice to those wanting to change their antifreeze – disconnect the bottom hose to drain. It’ll save you one big hassle. – Jim

Message: Thanks, Jim B. I was tempted to disconnect the lower radiator hose, but I always flush the cooling systems on every vehicle I've owned (every three years), and simply pulling the lower hose off prevents you from doing that properly, IMHO.
