I was at the super wal-mart "today" at about 2am and was looking at all the car magazines. I believe the title was popular hot rodder but I'm not sure...anyway some guy put the 481(?)hp viper motor in his dodge charger. Looked sick as hell...he had to build a steering column and front suspension from scratch. Sounds worth it to me though.

I agree, it was different. Could have achieved similar performance, though, for less money by going to a 505 hp wedge crate motor.

But, I bet he really draws a crowd when he opens his hood.

Too bad I sold my '68 Charger R/T 23 years ago!

I saw that beast on TV one day and it was awesome. I think that a lot of people who can afford it go with the V-10 just because it's awesome to say "It's a V-10" the motor just has a kind of mystique about it.

I have a Springfield .45 handgun called a V10 because of the 10 holes on top to vent the barrel, it does not have any horsepower but spits out one very nasty bullet..

"It's a V-10"

Well, considering that the largest part of most consumer markets are almost 100% clueless about the products they are buying, consumers latch onto a number, and the higher that number, the better. They don't know what effect that number has on it, but they know it's better. I heard a discussion that boiled down to "It's easy to get alot of horsepower out of a V-10, it's harder with a V-8". Never mind the fact that you can get a 502 Crate motor from GM that puts out 440HP (no mods) a hell of a lot cheaper than the 450HP Viper V-10. (I don't have the numbers on the 426 and 528 hemi kits from Dodge)

This is the same reason why people think "cams==power". DOHC is best because it's DOHC. If it doesn't say "DOHC" on the top it's old and antiquated. Never mind that OHCs were on engines around the turn of the century. A local county fair has a yearly engine exhibit. It's rather neat to see the tech on a 1910 20HP engine the size of a Dodge Ram. Next time you see someone claim that DOHC is high tech, slap them and show them some of the 1920-30's Alfa Romeos w/ DOHC.

80 year old tech is hardly "high tech", but people don't know any better.

Don't take this too seriosly man. Maybe people want a V-10 not because their stupid but because they have the money and want a motor that has "Viper" on the valve covers. You may know some ignorant people but they may not necessarily be on this site. I know if I had the money and had to choose between a 528 crate motor and a V-10 I'd probably choose the V-10 just because it's a V-10. It's a legend in it's own right and that's what some of those people want the lure that comes with a V-10, not to mention the power to weight ratio of the motor itself. And the 528ci kit from dodge puts out 610hp according to moparperformance.com with 465hp coming from the 426ci and 525hp coming from the 472ci. My point is that someone may not necessarily want to have max hp or and easy build-up. They may want the name or reputation of the motor.

I'm not saying that it was definately that guy's case, but it happens ALOT. Sometimes people do stuff because noone's done it or it's just "there" (ie: V-10 Dakota, 4.6 DOHC Ranchero, turbo 4.7 :)

I mean, why did anyone climb Pike's Peak?
