Message: I was wondering how many people on here were from the Great(?) state of California. (central california here)
I am very interested to see if any of you have tried to get your engine modifications through smog check (specifically smog check 2, which I will be facing). I know that smog test 2 is harder to pass then smog check 1 ... so I am a little hesitant to put mods on UNLESS the stock 4.7 EASILY passes smog.
I know that new cars are exempt from testing for the first 4 years, so I would imagine that none of you with 4.7's have went through the test yet. But, I would be interested in hearing about other engine sizes and smog tests in California.
Basically I don't want to spend a ton of money on mods, just to have to take them off again in the near future.

Message: You will still pass emissions even with a cat back system, a 180 T-stat, K&n air intake, all three of these together or just one will still make your truck pass fine. The computer(pcm) reflash may pose a problem, but i am not sure..

Message: I have a K&N cone filter (KNN-RE-0810) home brew kit that I bought from summit racing. When I bought the filter, a warning came up and said that it was an illegal product in Cali. But they sold it to me anyway. I kept my stock air box and hose, so when I do have to smog it (I have had the truck for 4 1/2 years and still haven't had to) I can just put the stock stuff back on and I should be ok....right?

Message: Thanks everyone. Thanks kota on 20s for posting the numbers ! Since you are in south cali, I would imagine that that was a Smog Check 2 that you went through ?
It does help a lot.
Think I am going to go with just a couple mods ... air intake, 70mm tb, cat-back, and plugs. After all, its AWD ... I am not planning on racing it. :>
I'll just keep the OEM parts ... just in case.

Message: This is my first post so I hope I don't screw it up.I don't think we have smog check II in southern California (but I could be wrong) just bought my Dakota 4 weeks ago 2002 4.7 auto (2100 miles on it now)I did a gibson cat back, Jet II chip,Volant air system (is on order), gibson headers will go on this week. The key to passing smog is make sure the engine and cat. are hot when you test it.Take it out and RUN IT for 15 to 30 min. don't use 5TH or O.D.

Message: I've heard there's alot of ricers on Wednsdays and it's better to hold out until Friday (usually saturday) for Test and Tune, it's a bit more expensive, $40 vs. $15, but you can get alot more runs in because of the much lower amount of people and they spray on the VHT.

Message: Was just un at Sac Raceway last weekend(Mar 30th) and it was PACKED!! Got there about 1015, finally got first run down track shortly after 12, and only got a total of three runs in. Not worth the $40 to me. Also, the track prep sucked. Chunks of rubber were coming up during burnout, and even with the VHT being sprayed at the line about ever four runs traction wasn't as good as it used to be last year. Also was quite warm. About 90 degrees for my last tow runs and between 85-90 my first run. Wed or Fri night would definitly be better, and I wouldn't mind beating some rice in a truck. It's a bit of a drive for me, so Wed is definitly out. I live in Lemoore, CA. South Valley

I'd like to head on over tomarrow but the cash flow is a bit on the tight side until the end of the month. I gotta head upto Seattle in a couple weeks to visit my cousin and don't wanna go in the red, and a payday happens to be smack dab in the middle of when I'm away (so bills are gonna be on the really tight side)

I usually do my own work when installing equipment on my truck, but im going to throw on a body lift here next week and I was just curious on the prices to install it, whiplash said 600 dollars, kyles 4wd said 400, i havent talked to California offroad or truck works in stockton, but the price differences are huge for the same thing! Oh well!:)

Message: Greetigns JPM - Didn't expect anyone else on here would be from Modesto. Cool.
We have had the Dak for only a month, so I haven't bought a lot of stuff for it yet. The few items I have bought, I got over the internet.
From what I can tell, there isn't much "quality" right around here in Modesto. For just basic junk, I usually just run to Pepboys.
One of the places that I used to go to when I had my Mustang (15 years ago) was up in Sacramento - Taugnaghties (I am sure I have spelled it wrong - and I don't even know if they are in business anymore)
Have you found any "decent" places ???
