NOt sure if any of you have seen this or not, but I saw on a commercial this new product from Fram called the Sure Drain. It is a plug that replaces the stock oil pan plug. Once replaced, it comes with a special hose that screws on the plug and then you turn a knob on the hose and it starts the oil draining from the pan. Supposed to keep the oil off you and the floor. I haven't ever really had a problem getting oil all over myself just draining the pan, now the getting the filter off, that's another story! If anybody has used this, what do you think?

I seen that at Auto Zone the other day. I wondered how well it worked too? And if you can trust it. I would be more interested in a oil filter relocator do they make one for the 3.9?

I went to the Fram website and they say that they have been tested not to leak, etc. There is a dust cover that screws on the plug to cover the opening that the hose slips on to in order to prevent dust, dirt, water, to get up there. I would be interested in a filter relocation, I somehow manage to get it all over my arm when I take the filter off!

I have the version that is in summit and it has dome well for me. I've had it for almost 6 yeasrs and no probloms at all. Makes everything quick and easy. My father even put one one his intrepid back in 93 and when he traded it in we pulled the valve out and put it on his new genIII dak.

Hey Bill!
I will give you a quick method to not get oil all up and down your arm. Drink a 2 liter bottle of soda. Then cut off the bottom area (the amount to cut off can vary in order to make it fit in the space). Then place the two liter bottle (with its cap on) with the end you cut off over the filter, squeeze and twist. The bottle will contain the oil that comes from the filter and will catch the filter after it unscrews from the block. Drop it down carefully and unscrew the bottle cap, draining the oil and retrieve the filter. That is pretty much it. It will definitely save your arms from getting messy. I hope this is not too confusing. Email me if all of this does not make sense.

Great tip cozwaldo. I fully understand what you are saying. I am due for an oil change in about 500 miles which will take me about 2 weeks to put on so I will be trying that tip shortly. Anybody else have anything on this Sure Drain product?

I have ones from www.fumotovalve.com on both my Dak and Durango. Originally bought one for the Durango so I could attach a hose to avoid getting oil all over the skid plate. Works great!

I have seen 5 different-sized FRAM SURE DRAIN at Walmart. Just buy the one that fits your engine.
The design of the FRAM SURE DRAIN has a DOUBLE seal. Not only is there a spring-loaded (schraider-valve) type of seal, there is also a hand screw-on cap that seals it too.
Installing the included screw-on hose starts the oil flow and guides it down into your catchpan.
The only thing I see about this design that I do not like is the fact that the screw-on hose must be stored somwhere while not in use. Perhaps in your drain-pan?

I think I may head over to Wal-Mart tomorrow and take a look. This sounds like a pretty innovative device. Between it and the tip I got earlier in this post, I shouldn't spill a drop of oil during a change ever again!

I emailed fram and asked if they made a suredrain for the 4.7 and they said they do not have one yet for the 4.7 but they are working on it.

I went over to Wal-Mart and took a look at the book for these things. They don't have anything listed for the 2000-2002 3.9s. They have the part number SG-1 for the earlier V6s. I don't know why they wouldn't have a number for the current 3.9s. The plug probably would work for our models. Like I said, I have an e-mail in to Fram so I will see what they tell me.

Yeah, I do the 2-liter deal & it works great.
Is this Fram plug all metal?
I have the fumoto valve on my truck and it works well with a length of hose to divert the oil flow preventing a mess.

When I was looking at the fram thing at Wal=mart today, it looked pretty well constructed. All metal (i think, from what I could see) and looks to have a good valve and everything in the hose. There is also a metal dust cover to put over the plug so they don't have dust going up into the pan. Still waiting to hear from Fram about the application for the 3.9 for 2001.

Just saw a TV ad for it today. Looks pretty neat. If I changed my own oil I'd definitely get one. Between that and the 2-liter bottle, oil changing could become a relatively clean event.

When I said that you need to get a "sure drain" that fits your vehicle... I meant that there are several THREAD SIZES available. (model#s = SG1, SG2,SG3,SG4,SG5) Each of these are just a different thread size. (A mix of various SAE and ISO thread sizes)
I am not certain but I *beleive* that somone said that Chrysler has used the same metric oil-drain threads on all engines for many years now. (14mm?)
If this is true... we just need to know what that threadsize is and match it up to the approprate "sure drain" model#.

I know what you are talking about Bruce. Like I said in my earlier post, they have the SG1 listed for the earlier 3.9s, but for some reason, from about 1999 on, they don't have anything listed for the 3.9s. I realize they are probably the same size, but I want to hear that from Fram before I go and buy one. I'll let you know what I find out whenver I hear back from them. And most likely that metric size is the SG1, but I just want to make sure.

I looked at them today and all the sizes were SD-1, SD-2 etc.?
The one i think loooked the closest was SD-1 1/2 - 20 threads.
I know someone knows the thread size and pitch?

I am pretty sure it is the SG-1 (i think it is SG, maybe wrong though) that fits the 3.9. Fram should get back to me when they open up tomorrow and I will let everyone know.

If anyone has info on a filter relocator I would be very interested, I'll look into that plug thing too. I thought however that the plugs for most trucks were 5/8" I know that's what mine is and my friends 5.2L 97 4x4 RC is the same. This is a very informative post though.

Here is what realy bites. I went to Walmart today with my dad and he got one for my moms 2002 Toyota Tundra but they did not have one for my Dodge 2001 4.7L. I even tried going back to 1999 Grand Cheerokee(sp).

A friend of mine got one for his 2001 4.7. The SD-2 fit his. I think all the drain plugs are the same in 2001 so the SD-2 should fit our 3.9. I am going to get one but I still have about 1500 miles before my oil change is due.

OK HERE IT IS FINALLY:

This is the size
the second Wal-Mart i checked actually had the current FRAM book with the Sure-Drain listings. It lists SD-1 for up to 2000 2.5L, 3.9L, 5.2L, and 5.9L NOT the 4.7L no listing for that or anything newer then 2000. But what are the odds that DC changed the size of the drain plugs on the 2001, 2002 2.5L, 3.9L and 5.9L
Have not installed it because i changed my oil friday but i appears to be a quality piece. Definatley lower profile the FUMOTO as well as a little more difficult for someone to go under you truck and drain your oil (it won't drain until the hose is attached) And the dust cap is a redundency to that being heavy duty and having an O ring seal.

Yeah, that's what I kind of figured too Geoff. I may have to just go over there and buy it and put it on and see how it works. I find it very hard to believe that DC would change a drain plug in a single year on the same engine. That's why I was a little surprised that Fram said they didn't have anything for my truck. Let us know what you think of it when you install it.
