Message: Yeah, I heard they were gonna discontinue selling all of their most popular models. They learned from GM that the best way to get the buying public to buy something that they didn't want to begin with is to make sure you don't offer what they really want. Too many people are buying Dakotas, so they gotta go. If too many people buy Rams, they will discontinue those also. You know they don't really like to sell too many vehicles..... that's just too much work. Besides, everyone knows that the truck lines make too much profit for them also. If they make a profit they might have to pay out dividends on their stock or even pay taxes! Yep, I predict that DC will quit offering trucks all together within the next 2 years.
Besides, I read about all this on the internet...... so it MUST be true!

Message: The 'cuda and Challenger (along with the Hemi itself) went out in a decision of "Castrate or Martyr". With the crash, insurance, gas, and emmissions regulations looming it would've become a gutless wonder before fading into history. Instead they just dropped it and let the name live on.
At one time the only engines available in the Corvette was a base 165HP and optional 210HP. Pretty bad for a car that gained weight and formerly had 430+HP engines.

Message: I can still remember back in '73 - very clearly having to wait in line for 3-4 hours at a time for my ration of gasoline. My '68 Plymouth was a very thirsty vehicle..... and very heavy as I pushed it forward in the long gas lines. The insurance companies and the epa were already trying to kill our fun. The oil shortage of '73 spelled total doom for the muscle car era.

Message: i work in the auto industry..ON the assembly line..and was just in the pilot projects team for a new vehicle (you're starting to see them on the streets now..slowly but ever so surely) we work
1 1/2hrs of over time a day to keep up with demand. We build 2 vehicles on the same line and our "sister plant" makes one and one of another companies car. I myself bought one and have to wait 6 weeks to have it built!!!! very high demand..one thing i know for sure though is that companies only care about profit. Its why they make the vehicles they make and try not to change too much each year to keep the spending down and profits up. If it sells well, they won't dump it. its their "bread and butter"!
I think alot of that article and the rumours floating around are speculation only!!!
I read in an automotive industry magazine, (available to only manufacturers..not a newstander...) that the dakota is going to get a facelift for 2003 model year. the chassis though will remain quite the same. (guess kinda like mustangs from 79-93/94..or whenever[?] )
so i really dont think there is much to worry about when it comes to the dak. I believe the ram/durango/dakota are all built on the same line (thats what the dealer told me..if its true i dont know..if anyone knows where..tell me)so im sure profits are enough to keep them running.....
4 years ago when i bought my dak, it was rare to see another, now i see them everywhere. And when i tell someone i have a dak..they always first say to me "is it red"? (yes it is,....and that question always pisses me off :-)
DAKOTAS WILL BE AROUND FOR A LONG LONG TIME..IM VERY SURE OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Message: This is old news now. I do trust the accuracy of car-truck news. Try and find something they have been completely wrong about and I bet you can't. Even if the factory changes a plan they are the first to report and usually the most accurate. All this said, car-truck.com didn't say the Dakota was being discontinued, they just said the redesign they were working on was cancelled. Scrapped because it wouldn't make for a better Dakota. They will continue making the Dakota until they come up with a replacement. Maybe they will lose the Dakota name but it doesn't matter. What matter is that Dodge makes a small truck with a big motor, thats all that matters, and the new Dakota was not going to be a small truck anymore. So I say great news! Although old news now.

Message: Read the latest buzz posted today on the same site. It says the Dakota will continue in it's current design for '03-'04(face lift this year as verified by an insider at Warran Truck Plant) Then for '05 it will be "replaced" with the new small truck design in the works. Will probably drop the Dakota name, but keep a truck in the same class. Kinda like when the dropped the Avaenger, but introduced the Stratus coupe as it's replacement.

I have to agree with hersbird, I have yet to see these guys proven wrong. So I guess DC has to jump onto the mini bullsh!t bandwagon now huh? We might as well face it, there all gonna be mecedes by the time it's over with!

Message: Chrysler dropped Cuda/Challenger at the height of it's popularity ? Hardly, sales numbers were in a serious downward spiral, mainly due to the gas shortage. Dropped them before they were castrated ? Thats hardly true either, big block was not offered for the last three years but the slant six was. Great cars, with easy access to the spark plugs even on big blocks, but lets get the facts straight.

Message: DC is probably moving to a smaller truck so that they can meet mpg requirements that will almost certainly pop up by 2005 model year (article in Buzz about the Ram and crash tests etc.) If they need to meet a 20-21 mpg average for thieir trucks, they build one that is small enough to average 25 so that the Ram can continue sucking gas at a gallon every 15 miles or so.

Message: I had a 1951 Willys wagon until 2000. They discontinued that great vehicle in 1963 when they came out with the Wagoneer.
I can do the same to my Dakota - just keep it running forever, if it's that great of a vehicle and there's nothing to replace it, it can be done.
That's what make classics...
