Message: Hey everyone,
OK here's the story: In a rush to drive back home from south dakota to put some new suspension part s on my dakota ( i was in SD rebuilding the upper engine at a friend's machine shop) I dropped the truck off at a local Grease Monkey to get the oil changed (first time not doing it myself)
Anyways I ran some errands while the truck was in there and came back and they gave me the run-through "all fluids checked, all full, everything looks good, give us money" I assumed they knew what they were doing and left for SD. Well not even 20 miles out of town and I hear a faint whine coming from what sounded like the back seat (CC). So I listen for a second and realize it is the transmission whining so I pull over. The minute I let off the gas there was a loud clunk and grinding sound. After I stopped I immediately looked under the truck to see if there were any apprent ATF leaks. none.
Then I checked the tranny dipstick. not even getting a reading. I added ATF until it was in the acceptable limits (took 2 1/2 qts, yes I carry all the fluids i could ever need with me). So I putted back my friend's shop in 2nd gear(highest one I had) and borrowed his old bug to drive home while I search for a new tranny.
Now I know what you're thinking...that I forgot to put fluid in or never checked it. I am very anal about maintaining my truck and I check the fluids at least once per week. And I had just spent 3 days with the truck parked in my friends spotless shop. There wasn't a spot of ATF on the floor ( I know because I had to scrub any fluid spots I left behind) and there were no signs of leaking around the pan.
Here's my question: Being as my taking the truck to the lube shop was the only idiosyncratic event I'm thinking that one of their "mechanics" are responsible for that being as they specifically told me the ATF was full. What do you guys think? Any suggestions as to how to approach this? Any idea what could have happened? I'm pretty pissed about the whole thing and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
the truck's a '92 5.2 CC auto 4x4

Message: SuperBeeDak, it sounds to me like they're in the wrong, and it wouldn't be the 1st, 2nd, or 5o,oooth time that a quick lube place screwed up. I have 2 friends with new engines because the "technicians" forgot to put in the drain plug before the refill. Somehow they managed to get a good reading?!? yeah right. they companies WILL dish out the money it takes to replace what they broke. Might take getting a lawyer to make them see your way and show them you're serious. Good luck with it man! Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Message: Maybe they took their reading with it cold and in the wrong gear. I lost my transmission to a leaking hose about1000 miles ago and it sounds to be about the same thing that happened to you. If it is messed up bad enough you may need a new radiator too, or an aftermarket trans cooler. It was explaned to me by the trans shop that when a transmission goes, if it blows chunks through the lines those metal bits will get caught up in the radiator screen filter. They said there is about a 30% chance the radiator can be backwashed. If it can't(in my case) the readiator cooler can be bypassed and the lines can go directly to an aftermarket cooler. Luckily axilary coolers aren't to expensive. I agree that if they did wrong they should pay for it, even if you have to get a lawyer into it.

Message: Sounds to me like those jacka$$es put their suction tube down the wrong hole and realized they made a mistake and didn't refill the tranny right. Good luck.

Message: Well I think I have an idea as to what I'm going to do. This is going to be a serious pain in my ass because the shop is in South Dakota and I'm in Colorado. I'm gonna go to a local Grease Monkey and have someone explain their oil/lube procedure in vivid detail step by step so I can try and see where they may have done this. That way when I approach the South Dakota location I can just say "your dumbass technician did this step wrong and this happened". Wish me luck.

Message: Hey BlackDak
Where do they use suction tubes? I thought they just drained the oil the old fashioned way. I wasn't aware of anything being put into the dipstick.

Message: Could it be that they drained your tranny...thinking they were draining the engine, then drained the engine of oil and simply did not refill the tranny?
Just a crazy idea. I have seen Junky Lube strip out drain plugs, leave them loose...all manner of things...
