Subject: Fogging up!
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey all. I've been driving my 2001 dak for over a year now, and I can honestly say this truck is awesome. 4.7L 5spd, Club Cab, 4x4 off road pkg. There is only two complaints I had about this truck. NO THIRD DOOR, and foggin up. the ventilation system sucks! I was wondering if anyone else has come across this problem yet. If so, what have you done to remedy it? It happens in winter, and summer, so it can't be a temperature problem. If I crack a window, it goes away, but it gets too noisy. Oh yeah, the third door thing doesn't really bug me because the club cab portion is kinda full of stereo equipment. Awesome site here. Can't wait to hear and answer peoples questions.

It fogs up because it is a tight built truck. I would rather my windows fog a bit and have to either crack the window or run the defrost a bit than have a cab that has door drafts and is noisy. I'm not trying to post a smart asz reply, what I'm trying to say is that the cabs are built good and sealed so you don't loose alot of heat or a/c. Third door? Hell, I've got 4!

IT'S NOT AIR TIGHT. I get a draught through my pwr lock/pwr window panels on either side. There are also two vents behind the rear seat to help with this. I'd rather turn up the heat one notch and have a truck that isn't completly air tight rather than not being able to see left or right without lowering my windows!

Hey Mike,

Just dawned on me.....your stereo equipment isnt blocking the vents on your back wall are they?

Just curious

My windows on my quad cab fog if theres moisture outside but it goes away as soon as the defroster kicks in!

Not trying to be a smart _ss, but when was the last time you cleaned the inside glass surfaces of your truck? My grandfathers LHS was doing this untill I cleaned them real good with a quality cleaner. Give it a shot.

I have to agree with Mike, I have a QC and the side windows fog up all the time. Always having to kick on the the defroster, which clears it up pretty fast. Never have owned a car that was so fussy about using the defroster. It gets annoying on longer trips to have to monkey around keeping the windows unfogged.

Sorry about comming across the wrong way about my ?. I've tried everything. Cleaning with window cleaners that windshield installers use, windex, and even the anti-fog spray. Nothing has worked. Yeah, I have the equipment in the back, but my brothers Dak does the same thing without the stereo equipment in the back. I don't have A/C. Just sick and tired of this fogging up of the windows. It's to the point that I need to lower the windows to see out. I have a split window in the rear, so there is no defrost on it! Seems that way anyways. I push the defrost button and the mirrors clear very fast. The rear window does nothing. Any other tips or comments welcome. The only thing I can think of is having wet floor mats. Eventhough my truck still fogs up in the summer. I haven't seen a car/truck with this bad a circulation system yet! Thanks to those already replying.

Just use the defrost! That's what it's there for.
My Dakota is a 2002 and I just picked it up new the other day. It fogs up in a hurry too, but a turn of the heat switch and it's gone in an instant. Easily remedied!

not so easily remedied. Like I said. My defrost button will not clear up my side windows. My defrost vents will, however, I need to crank them up so much that I can't hear myself think. Even then, when they are defrosted and I turn it down, it takes 1 minute to fog up again.

Seriously, all you need to do is just run the vents, defroster, whatever. Your breath adds humidity to the air and causes the fog, if you turn on the vents dry air will come in (it doesnt have to be hot or cold, just fresh air). Do the new ones have a switch that goes from recirculated air to fresh air, i got a 98, if it does take the outside air. IF your windows are that bad you arent doing something right,

When you first get in the truck and it's cold outside, roll your window down a bit. If the glass is cold and your warm breath touches it, you get condensation. Leave the window open a bit till the defrost air warms the glass and you'll be ok.

I don't recall seeing anything for switching between fresh air and recirculated air. I know after walking in the rain or getting snow on me and then getting into the truck causes it to fog up. To get rid of it I'd crack my window open a little bit to equalize the humidity level in the truck until the heat/defroster takes over. Quick way to get rid of the fogging up is to turn your A/C for a bit to dry the air out faster.

the problem lies with the fact that you dont have a/c....the a/c kicks on even with the heat to de-humidify it...

Sorry about that dk! this thing is just pissin me off. I know my defroster and vents are there, I'm not that dense. I just need to find an answer to my query. It looks like the A/C response makes the most sense to me. My brothers truck has the same problem, and it too doesn't have A/C. hey, doer, does your dak have A/C? For that matter, does anyone else have this problem without A/C? And on the other hand, does anyone have this problem and have A/C. I seem to have gotten my answer now. thanks for the replys. Sorry about frustrations coming out!

02'QC with AC and I have never seen a car fog up like this one. Even on standard days with little humidity, it likes to fog around the door windws. A little AC and it goes away, but WTFO?

well, I have another thing to look at...Does it smell also? There was a post a while back about the drain hole on the AC unit not draining properly and water building up in there...That would cause a foggy situation also

I've heard about that drain plug. Is it in the body of the truck? Even though I don't have A/C, maybe there is water trapped in this area that needs to be released. My truck has a bit of a stench(no, it's not me), but I think it may be because of the MDF box behind the seats. It's a 7.2 cu.ft. box, so there is a lot of wood there, and to boot, it's not carpeted yet! This A/C drain may be my problem. Think we dak owners need to get to the bottom of this! I'd like to try and get in touch with someone at dodge to see if they have any comments. Any worthwhile ones that is.

I've learned a neat trick on keeping the fog of the windows on 01-03 daks, turn your middle selector knob to the recirc feature face or bi-level for about 5 to 10 seconds with fan on high. Then set it back to your previous setting it works wonders.

If you don't want fans or defrost try treating the glass.
I bought some of this stuff last summer at the Laguna Seca Super Cross race and it really works.
I have used alot of different anti fog treatmens over the years and this one is by far the best I have ever seen. give it a try if nothing else.
