Subject: Dealer Broke My Tranny IP: Logged
Message: This is a follow-up to the posts under "Get This Sh*t" a few days ago. To summarize, I took my 4.7l auto to the dealer to get routine tranny service(I have had no problems with the tranny), they did the service, but when they took it for a test drive, the tranny took a crap. They tore it apart and found that the torque converter seized and that I was probably going to get a new tranny(still waiting word from DC). What is the role of the torque converter, and is it one of the main components of the tranny? What did they do, forget to put the ATF in? Any comments? Thanks

Message: A torque convertor is basically the device between the transmission and engine crankshaft that hooks the two together. Above a certian RPM range, the torque convertor allows the transmission to couple to the engine. That way at lower RPMs, the engine doesn't stall out when your stopped. :0)
It's kinda like a clutch in that regard, only not. It's round, filled with fluid, and little vanes to move said fluid. The side hooked to the engine isn't physically connected to the side hooked to the transmisison. Well, it shouldn't be at least... if it's locked, that means the bearings that seperate the two are froze up. Or the mechanism that 'locks' the two together at cruising speed is broken. Could be a defect on the TCs part, but if your tranny is toast, I'd probally lean towards the tranny making it go bad for some reason. Perhaps debris in the fluid from spontanious destruction of the transmission.
