Subject: Clay Bar Question??? IP: Logged
Message: I usually use the Meguires three step but with Gold Class as the final step. I am planning on using a clay bar and was wondering where in the three steps it should be done? First? or between steps 1 and 2? Or does using the Clay Bar eliminate the need for steps one and two?
Thanks

Message: thats a good question...i was also wondering the same thing. orgininally, i thought steps 1 and 2 eliminated the need for the clay bar. now, however, based on what ive seen, i think the clay bar actually comes before steps 1 and 2. someone had a post on that somewhere around here. i think thats the road im going to take

Message: Check out the Zaino Bros website. I think the clay bar usually comes before anything else. I don't know about the Meguires process but I believe the concepts should pretty much be the same. I think the site is zainobros.com. hope it helps.

Message: The clay bar should be done after the cleaning...then follow the clay bar with a coat of wax...If you really wanna get crazy you can put a coat of polish then wax..the clay bar only removes ground in dirt...I just did it this weekend and it really does work....u can hear the dirt coming off!!

Message: I would only replace step one with the clay bar and do step 2 twice. I used clay bar on my dakota last weekend to remove some multi-purpose liquid nails and it worked great. It took a while but got all of the liquid nail off and no damage to the paint. That clay bar is great.

Message: Well...
My clay bar experience was not great. I'm guessing it was just too hot and sunny and the lube was evaporating faster then i could use the clay. The clay would stick and leave residue. So i just went with the Meguiars 3 step. I'll have to try the clay again on a cloudy day

Message: The way that it should be done is to wash your truck, use the clay bar with some Meguires quick detailer for lube, when finished, you can wax, if you want an even better finish, do the Meguires 3 step after you use the clay. A word of advice, when you are using the clay, make sure that the paint is cool, just like waxing, do it in a cool or shady area not in direct sunlight. When you are finished the truck should have be squeaky clean, and I mean that to, this is how I do mine at least 5-6 times a year, when finished while you are wiping the truck down it will squeak.

Message: Cecil,
Did you use Scratch X on the whole truck..? I think these dark colored Dakota's scratch all by themselves.

Message: Thanks Cecil,
I have the buffer and use it all the time on cars and boats. I just have never used the Scratch X with the buffer. I'm sure you are using a thick foam pad. I'll give it a try. I use all of the other products you mentioned. I have the patriot blue truck and also a Cadillac Allante that is dark green. Dark colors are always the best looking but they will show any flaw.

also after you buff on the scratch-x with a throw away bonnet, then use a terrycloth bonnet, then wipe it by hand to get the rest of it.use a terrycloth rag(a big one). then cleaner wax and so on. the more times the better! i did it three time today!(arms are dead, but the beer is helping:0)!

Message: I have the Mustang as shown of course. I gave the 93 Sonoma to my son with 86K miles. (It was a great truck by the way). Only had to buy 2 batteries. Then the Cadillac Allante'. They were made from 87 to 93. In 93 they came out with the 300hp Northstar engine. The Allante' was a combined build with Cadillac and Pinninfarino of Turin Italy. It is basically a shortened Eldorado with the body and interior built by Pinninfarino. It's like a 2 seat Cadillac corvette convertible.
And of course the truck.

Message: 2THEXTRM, if you ever have a problem with swirl marks or scratches in your paint, let me know. I have someone locally that is good with chryslers. Chrysler paint for some reason is the softest paint made. I have him buff my truck 3-4 times a year.

Message: Thanks Dave, I actually detail vehicles on the side myself. Supposed to be in the 50's today, a real heat wave, and the skies are clear for the moment, but that will change over to rain before the end of the day they say. So I might clay bar, polish and wax my Dak today if I can get my studying done intime. I am going to school right now so I only have time to do my vehicles though so no extra Dakota summer cash this year:( Guess I will have to eat out less and not buy so many DVD's to keep up the mods:)
So you live near Syracuse?

Message: Actually, I live in Liverpool. A buddy of mine owns a detailing shop in Syracuse. When I bought my truck, we sent it to a couple different detailing shops to see who did a better job. There isn't 1 shop in syracuse that didn't leave swirl marks. Hey it's black, you see everything. So far, he is the only one that I know that has done my truck that can hide scratches and not leave swirl marks.

Message: I live in Central Square, if you know where that is:) Using a high speed polisher is not easy and only alot of experience can give you the good results on paint like ours. Once the detailer understands the paint doesn't not buff out like normal and requires different technique to remove swirls and not make more. Most auto finishes respond well to the heat generated by a high speed polisher, just not the Dakota finish. Wonder if the Ram has the same problem? They seem to share some same paint colors.

Message: Yea, I know where central Square is, used to go to Cramers quite a bit until they closed. Know any places up the to go wheeling? anyway, Almost all chrysler paint is soft, don't know what it is, but ti's the worst. Almost as bad as the old GM red that after a couple years turned almost white.
