Subject: Bed Extenders IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows if the Mopar Bed Extender, and the Steelhorse Bed X-Tender are the same product, in they way that they connect to the tailgate.
I have seen the installation docs for the X-Tender version, and they have 2 straps the connect into the tailgates side latches. I have seen a picture of the Mopar version, but in the Mopar catalog, but it was on a RAM, and it didn't show the straps.
I really want to know if the Mopar version has the same system.
Thanks,
Sean

Message: Sorry I don't know about the Mopar version. I have the Steel Horse model. I had to contact Steel Horse for plastic pins to latch up the cage on the tailgate. The straps were not long enough to close the tail latch. I just leave it in the unlocked position. I haven't used the extender on long rides but I never experienced the cage popping up.

Message: Did you get the Steel Horse for the small truck or for the large truck NJQCDak?
My '01 Quad's Steel Horse Extender has straps that reach just fine. The retailer told nme to go with the Steel Horse for the full-size trucks, not the model for the small truck.
The only problem I had was that the template for the mount holee drillings was a tad short, had to drill a second set of holes higher up to make it level, front to back.

Message: Why buy a bed extender at all? I made mine in a couple of hours with $20 worth of 1.5" PVC pipe and 1/4" x 6" toggle bolts. It's light, works great, looks decent (painted gloss black like my truck), and rarely bounces when it's extended. When I want to confine small cargo or make sure it won't bounce, I stretch my old tailgate cargo net around it and secure the net on top to the latch posts at the end of the bed side walls and on the bottom to the latches in the tailgate.

Message: Pretty fast. It's just a matter of backing out the two bolts and lifting the unit out. I was thinking of replacing the bolts with 1/4" threaded rods and putting wingnuts on the ends so I wouldn't even need a screwdriver to remove them. Message: FYI: The Steel Horse Automotive bed extenders are made by AMP Research, the same company I just ran a group buy through for the billet aluminum fuel doors. You can see their direct product pricing at www.amp-research.com. There's also some extenders on E-bay regularly for about $145.
The main reason to get the aluminum extender vs. PVC would be for resistance to heat and appearance. It's just like the K&N filter tube - they both work, it's just a matter of whether you want a shiny piece there or a plumbing tube.

Message: I'll take the plumbing tube since it's under my tonneau most of the time and spend the money I save on something else.
