Subject: Mixing Synthetic & Regular Oil? IP: Logged
Message: Is it OK to mix Synthetic oil with regular oil?
Of course I would use the same brand and grade Castrol GTX 5W-30. I have a case of 12 X 1L bottles of regular Castrol oil already. I'm thinking of buying the 4L container of Castrol synthetic oil (instead of using regular oil which I have been), and mix the two oils.
4L(syn) + 2L(reg) would equal the amount I need for the engine.
Thanks in advance

Message: Snyth and Dino are soluable without any problems. In the motorcycle industry at least, there are off-the-shelf dino/synth blends available, like Golden Spectro. You can also mix across brands. In fact, you can even mix weights. Mixing weights gives you a different blend value. Remember high school chemistry? "What percent solution do you have if you mix 2 liters of a 20% salt solution with 1 liter of a 30% salt solution?" You'd still get a salt solution, no matter what! Thinner oil (10W30 vs 10W40) will thin the total mixture and vice versa. What you need to decide is, what is your goal with your oil? And will the blend compromise the goal? I can see this flame war starting already.
For the record, I am recommending nothing. I am simply saying that you can safely blend weights, brands, and synth/dino for typical engine oils with no dangerous results.

Message: Why be overly cheap? If there is any concern over something this low buck, it is worth peace of mind to just not do it. I hear stuff like each different kind of motor oil swells the gaskets and seals differently and crappola like that, so when your block starts leaking do you want to be thinking 'damn did the oil do that?' Why spend all that money on synthetic if you are going to be wondering...over two lousy quarts of regular oil?

Message: Go to Shell's website and read this:
http://www.shell.ca/code/motoring/encyclopedia/motoroil/synthetic_oils.html
1) It IS okay to mix synthetic with non-synthetic
2) It IS okay to mix viscosities
Just make sure you know what you are doing when blending viscosities.
Hope this helps.

I use AMSOIL right out of the bottle with nothing else added.
Anytime you put an additive in your oil you change the
chemistry of that oil and the oil manufacturer then is not liable
for any oil related failures.
(This excludes Gear Lubes that require and or recommend the
use of approved friction modifiers to prevent chatter of limited
slip differentials or wet disc brake systems).

Mixing Oils ????
Mixing oils is not recommended due to additive package incompatability. There are few incompatability issues with the base oils --- but there are major concerns with the additive package incompatability when mixing oils.
Note: This does not mean your engine will blow up or die. If you are in a situation where you need to top-off with a quart you will be okay.

Only Group IV and Group V Base Oils are 100% True Synthetics
A TRUE synthetic uses either the Group IV or Group IV base stock, or a mix of the two. As a matter of fact, I don't think any of the synthetics use all of just one, they mix both of them. Group VI is PAOs (Polyalfaolefins) while Group V is the esters.
Everyone who is into "home brewing" oils needs to keep something in mind. The additives used in Group I, Group II, and Group III oils are different and don't work well together.
In other words, an additive package tailored for a Group III synthetic is not going to work properly in Group II base oil. If you go mixing a Group II and Group III oil, you'll likely wind up with an oil that is inferior (from a performance standpoint) to either of the two oils you mixed.
The same would hold true when mixing Group IV and Group V oils with anything else.

Message:
Additional information:
Myth: Synthetic lubricants are not compatible with petroleum
Untrue. As stated above --- The synthesized hydrocarbons, polyalphaolefins, diesters and other materials that form the base stocks or base oils of high quality name brand synthetics are fully compatible with conventional petroleum (dino) oils.
Compatibility is something to keep in mind, however, whether using petroleum oils or synthetics. It is usually best to use the same oil for topping off that you have been running in the engine. That is, it is preferable to not mix your oils.
The reason is this: The functions of additives blended for specific characteristics can be offset --- when oils with different additive packages are put together. For optimal performance, it is better to use the same oil throughout.

Message: The "synthetic" that you are thinking of using is a group 3 base stock. This means that you would be paying almost five bucks a quart for something that is little more than high-grade mineral oil. I would suggest sticking with the basic GTX formulation or spend your money on a TRUE synthetic like Amsoil,Mobil 1,Redline, or Royal Purple.

Message: Well seeing that I wrote this post 3 years ago almost to the day. I never did mix synthetic and dino oil together.
I ended up switching from dino oil to Castrol Synthetic and then to mobil 1 which I have been running with for over a year now.
Thanks,
Anthony

Message: It's all good, as long as you use the same weight oil, for example 5W-30 conventional and 5W-30 Synthetic; mixed 50/50.Why? do you think they sell syntheic blend which has more conventional oil in it then syntheic oil just remember you may have to change your oil filter more ofter.
