My white 2K Dak has small (pin-head or smaller) rust spots all over the place. Side of the box, fender flares, extended cab side…Everywhere. I’ve been to the dealer and got the “atmospheric conditions” excuse. Since I’ve noticed this problem, I’ve looked at every other white vehicle that has crossed my path and haven’t seen any other cases. Has anyone out there seen or heard of this. Does anyone know a remedy?
I hand wash my truck every week and wax every second week.

Thx

Get a clay bar and make sure you keep the car surface wet when using the clay bar to remove the imperfections. Hope this helps.

I would raise holy hell with the dealer! Tell them that you want it repainted under warranty. There's no way that should be happening.

Has your truck been parked anywhere there was any type of metal work going on. Examples such as left at a brake shop, at your dealer for repairs, around railroad tracks, construction, ect..
It sounds like metal dust that has settled on your paint and is starting to show. I had this happen to a vehicle that was at the auto shop for 3 weeks. After the car was at home for about a month these rust specs were everywhere. I had to buff out everything on the car but it did come out.

I have the same thing and I was told it was "Industrial Fallout" lol.... I thought I had heard everything, guess not. In any case the dealership took it in and did a buff and wax. Problem is gone.

I also read an article about "railway dust" when cars and trucks are being delivered via the railroad system. This could be your problem and it's the dealers responsibility to clean their vehicles as soon as they come in. I will try to find it and post it here.

I believe the Zaino website does talk about this kind of problem ("damage" from rail transport). Check it out.

JJ,

The small rust spots are rail dust. I've got a
2002 white Quad Cab and I get them all the
time. The dust is really small particles of your
front brake rotors and pads that are hot and
embed themselves in the wax and/or factory
clear coat, and rust due to the moisture in the
air. All cars have them, they just don't show up
on the darker colors.

Anyway, get a Meguires clay bar kit (Autozone
$10) and follow the instuctions, it's really easy.
I do my truck once every two months or so.

I've noticed that my Quad Cab gets alot more
spots than my wifes white Grand Cherokee,
even though she puts on 5 or 6 times the
miles. (I only clay her's in the spring and fall.)
I think it's due to the factory brake pads in my
Quad Cab. I'll probably try a different set on
my truck this summer to see if it makes a
difference.

Later,
Lemmers

I just rememberd reading something on another web site about an airborn pollutant in certain areas of the US that cause these spots. I do not remember exact details. I will do some searching to see if I can find it.
That may be the reason why my white 2001 Quad and my wife white 97 Grand Am have never had these spots. I live in the northeastern part of PA.

I've got the exact same problem with a white 2000 CC dak. It's caused by Metallic brake dust. Yes - that means that you will polish it all off one weekend and it will start to appear again after a few weeks. I've found that after running the clay bar over the paint to get the spots off if I keep a good coat of wax on the truck, I don't see as many spots. Also, I'm going to switch to non-metallic break pads.

Cheers

I found the site. I was wrong, they talked about carbon mixing with the acid in rain, dew and snow
causing spots. It also mentioned the brake paticles. This was on the ( autopia-carport )web site.
This is a interesting site with allot of detailing imformation.

I have a white 2001 Quad and I too have the tiny rust spots. I didn't notice them until after a snow storm in N.C. (it happens). They salted the sh*t out of the roads and I drove around for about a week w/o washing the truck and I attribute the rust spots to that. It happened to my '99 Silverado too a few years ago after a snow storm, salt, etc...... I don't know that I buy all this brake dust talk- who knows. I'm going to the dealer soon so I'll see if they are willing to do anything about it.
