Message: Ok, everyone hates it, I know I do. Makes my front Alloy wheels look like crap. :0/
I've tried a few things and it's always been a royal pain to clean them. Today I went down to clean the inside of my windshield (Some sort of film that refracts light and makes night driving, or into the sun, difficult). Couldn't find the glass cleaner, so I grabbed our bottle of 'Dirtex' which is used for the stove. Hey, it said it wouldn't streak...
Well, it cleaned the windshield. Then, on a whim, I sprayed some on a wheel and the dirt came -right off- with a wipe! :0)
Don't know if anyone has posted this or not, but Dirtex works for brake dust!
Unfortunetly, I found six scratchs, two dents, and a ding on my truck. :0(
Darnit, I -knew- I shouldn't have washed it...

Message: The film on the windsheild, from what I know, is residue from interior cleaners like Armorall. When the sun hits it and it is heated on the dash it releases residue that sticks to the glass. My personal weapon of choice for glass cleaning is Mothers chrome polish. It leaves a mirror sheen and makes water bead up like RainX.

Message: The film that developes inside car and truck windows is called "plastisizing". The cause is from the plastics and vinyl releasing chemicals. Even if you don't smoke the widows will still get this film.

Message: Knobbyman,
I think thats the -only- way to keep it clean! :0)
I have this horrible habit of having 'fun' in my school's back dirt parking lot. It's all rutted, pitted, and full of whoopty-dos... loads of fun! Not so good for a clean truck... but loads of fun!

Message: Todd,
Dirtex will also remove any wax or protectant you may have put on your wheels. If you wash your DAK on a regular basis just using a wash mitt with a good quality car soap (not dishwasher detergent) will remove any brake dust without removing any wax or protectant you may have on the wheels.

Message: Handi you are right on the money about plasticizing. Ever try a product called "303 Aerospace Protectant"? I use it specifically for my tonneau but you can use it for tires, alloy wheels, plastic and vinyl. It prevents UV rays from breaking down the plasticizers in the vinyl and rubber. Never ever use a silicone based product to shine your vinyl. You will eventually end up with cracks in the dash etc.

Message: Oh yeah. Just a word of caution. Just be careful what you use to clean your wheels with. It may take the brake dust right off and seem great but just make sure that it doesn't eat the clearcoat on your alloy wheels.
