Subject: Would high amp alternator help? IP: Logged
Message: I put on the Black Magic fan and ASP underdrive pully and am dealing with the slight undercharging problem. I do mostly city driving so its not keeping the battery charged enough, so at startup after a long period of sitting is a little slugish. Would using a high amp alt help fix the prob? I currently have a 550 cca battery that is a couple of years old. I will put in 750cca battery this week too.

Message: Adding a higher amp alternator would just negate the gain you are getting from the underdrive pulley. It takes more power to turn the higher amp alternator. It would be cheaper to put the stock pulley back on.

Message: Could it be that the battery is going bad. I am looking into an Optima battery. I think they are better for holding a charge over a period of time as compared to any standard battery.

Message: How will the high amp alt draw more mechanical load off of the engine? Is the pully larger? Is there a heavier drag? ??? I only ask cause I dont know.

Message: I'm not sure on how it works, but when my friend had your same problem after pullies in his ram, a high amp alternator fixed the problem. I dont think he had to get a battery.

Message: Higher amp alternator takes more power to make that extra amperage - listen to Duner's good advice or waste your money, your choice.

Message: You can get a pully for the alternator to make it spin faster.

Message: You get more amperage out of an alternator buy using more layers of wire in the coil assemblys. They more wire you have the greater the magnetic field is generated. It takes more power to turn heavier interanl windings and more magnetic drag to fight. There is no free lunch. You have to put more energy in to get more out! I have seen guys install large 2-3lexindyn alternators and they had to run a super charged 454 with nitrous to power them up. These lexindyn(sp) were designed for diesel electric trains. The engines are at full load turning these. They use them for key down cb radio transmitting compititions. I agree with the gentelman that recomended putting the stock pulleys back on. Count yourself lucky that you are not haveing cooling problems as well.
