Message: put drain plugs in auto transmission pans ?...I did my scheduled fluid/filter change this afternoon and it just seems to be an unnecessary pain in the ass not having one.

Message: I dont think the tranny is angled in a way where you could just conveniently drain it out like motor oil. Its also important to take off the plate to see and inspect for metal shavings (which is normal wear and tear). Its a more effective way to remove excess oil.
Pain in the butt I know, but every year or two isnt too bad. Plus, you have to get inside there to replace the filter.

Message: yea, but if you could drain it before removing the pan it would make it so much easier. I think when Crank-and-Chrome used to be called shade tree mechanic, they had a kit on the show that you could actually put a drain plug into the pan

Message: Having spent some time as a mechanic, I can say that many tranny pans do have a drain plug in them, and that some of the after-market tranny pans have a drain plug in them.
